Bizarre Engravings
« on: June 03, 2008, 07:06:00 pm »

I'm in a fortress, mountain/Terrifying Plain, and I'm getting some truly bizarre engravings.  Other than the typical laboring and dying from undead horses, there are a few that I truly can't explain.

Elaboration:

Udirmir:  The Black Uncle(Tom?)

Engraved on the wall is an image of a dwarf and windows by Urist Uristurist.  The dwarf is surrounded by the windows.

lolwut?  There are no windows in my fortress.  It's all I can manage to not abandon and check that one out in Adventure mode.

Further Elaboration:

Enoliburk:  The Grizzly Ash

Engraved on the wall is an image of a dwarf and bats by Urist Uristurist.  The dwarf is surrounded by the bats.

This one isn't very weird, but it was funny because while this was being engraved one of my peasants was very unhappy and complaining to the expedition leader about being accosted by terrible vermin.

What's your weirdest engraving?

Moons.

Dozens upon dozens of moons.

What makes this strange is that it isn't just one engraver that does it. I enlist many pesants that reach a good skill in engraving from smoothing my fortress to make general engravings.

Yes, I checked my fortress(On a copied folder of my general DF folder) in adventurer mode. My civilization symbol is rope weed. So whats with all the moons?

Are you using the Martial Arts mod by chance?  Cause I made a fortress with that mod in a haunted swamp (I always build in evil areas, where's the fun otherwise?) and like a third of my engraver's images were of a dwarf surrounded by bats.

An other third were of chestnuts.  The map didn't have any of either, nor did he have a preference for them.

I'm not using any mods.  Mods ruin games for me, I'm a purist.

EDIT:  I'll see if the first guy likes windows.

EDIT EDIT:  Nope.  He detests bats though...  The plot thickens...

Vanilla, except making other civ's playable.

Most engravings are of other random things, but I noticed that moons are more numerous than any other singuler engraving.

Behind moons? Groups of dwarves by about a dozen. Although those were made at the beginning(I wanted around ten engravings along a wall for every season to cronicle events), and even then there were moons.

Bloody moons... In the entrance hallway after an ambush.

And he's infecting all the engravers?!

Time to outfit the fortress guard with silver weapons instead of wood.

This reminds me of the Far Side comic where the guy was shooting the werewolf with the-- You know, it'd be better if I just looked it up.

Here's my theory:
One of your first few engravings was a masterful engraving of a moon (or there existed a masterful engraving of a moon somewhere in the world). Maybe your dwarves are drawing renditions of the engravings of the moons and since there are more and more renditions of moons, the likelihood of another dwarf choosing moons to make renditions of is higher.

Maybe.

Or maybe they just don't have anything to engrave and you might want to check out my engravings mod. :P

Huh, looks like thats the truth.

Still, the mystery of a werewolf in the fortress is intriguing.

All masons to the sparring room now! Silver practice weapons!

Bonun Tinoth "The Soot of Equality"
Engraved on the wall is an exceptionally designed image of a human by ashrir daselrovod. the human is burning

apparently ashrir has a thing against humans and was ecstatic when a dragon torched a human caravan

I've got an engraver who likes grates. I sent him to do some engraving and he wound up carving...let's see, a pictures of grates, a picture of his cat, and two pictures of himself, surrounded by grates.

I'm sure the broker will appreciate having all of that in his tomb.

I remember in one of my forts, I had an engraver who liked doors.  He made pictures of doors all over the apartment blocks.  I like to think he was a practical joker.
