Open the VR pod.
It's empty. Or at least there's no one in it. The inside looks fairly normal, except for the wrist restraints on the arm rests.

The room next to the VR one is about the size of a small office but is completely empty. There's not even light strips to illuminate it. Just 4 bare walls, a tiled floor and a metal ceiling. How anti-climatic.

You get into the VR pod and make yourself comfortable. Strangely, the wrist restraints don't automatically clank down; you had honestly expected the machine to just drag you kicking and screaming into whatever terrible world it wanted to show you, but it seems like this is a journey you'll need to make of your own accord.  The VR system is a bit different from normal; it has no gloves for interaction, and instead of a screen there's some kind of VR helmet to strap to your head. There's also a rather prominent "POWER" button straight in the center of the console.  Seems that they want it to be as easy as possible to turn off and on.

You press the button to open the door.

The door opens onto what looks vaguely like a metal wall with concentric circles or rings making up its surface. You stare at it for a moment, confused, before remembering where you are. You dodge to the side, but not quite quick enough. The wall telescopes out, expanding into an enormous metal spike.
[4]
The spike clips you in the left arm, carving a deep gash across your forearm before it recoils back into the room and the door closes behind it.
