But talking to inanimate objects is entirely different, it's more like interacting with other people.

You could place some webbed over cage traps at your front door, capture some human traders and put them in your basement. Then you don't need to talk to yourself anymore, you can talk to them. At least I think that was what I suggested to me last time I and I sat down for a chat.

Talking to inanimate objects is fine. It's when they answer back that you need to start worrying.

One of my schizophrenic neighbours was absolute quality, avoided getting a wife because he said having 3 voices in his head was enough, he didn't need 4

Madmen run the asylum and the doctors never existed
Year 21:

I've decided that the asylum was a waste of resources and never should have existed in the first place. I will briefly take over the entirety of the asylum before moving onto... bluer pastures?

And for sheep, horses, bears, armadillos, amoeba, submarines, and gas giants. It's kind of a risky place to go immediately after removing your asylum from existence.

Depending on the purpose, it can vary from not so crazy to "Why is he like that?".

Generally speaking, I just talk to myself as a means of optimizing my thinking sometimes. Sometimes, having a voice in your head, self-generated, might take up some brainspace that otherwise could be invested in something else. So, to make things work better, I voice my thoughts, while leaving calculations and such (the parts that don't need to be recited) to be run silently in my head.

Of course, when I feel/know I am alone, I tend to have some odd topics come to mind; and hearing someone laugh from behind a door or something could be rather jarring though.

I consider talking to yourself to be uncrazy, just as an aside. It helps to work through things sometimes, basically thinking out loud. What might be a bit crazy is if you develop two distinct voices that actively seek to dominate the other or acts separately from what can be considered your 'normal' personality.

I stopped wondering how crazy I am years after I kept talking to myself.

My opinion about talking to yourself is pretty nuanced and I believe there are several normal reasons why you would want to talk to yourself

  • You love the sound of your voice.
  • You want people to think you're crazy
  • You feel lonely and so you create a semblance of companionship. Weird terminology but just think of the companion cube from portal. People loved that piece of metal despite it having no personality whatsoever.
  • You love the sound of your singing voice.
  • You find that it let's you think clearer.
  • You want to express your emotions/thoughts (anger for example).

and so on...

There are plenty of reasons why you would want to talk to yourself that are perfectly sane. Perhaps they aren't quite normal but they're definitely okay. Most people talk to themselves in one way or another. They just tend to do it privately and only in specific circumstances (like singing in the shower).
