How Crazy is Talking to yourself?
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:30:22 am »

So I talk to myself pretty much all the time. In order not to I have to make an effort not to.

I talked to myself since I was a young child, as a teen, and as an adult.

Yet people seem to find it annoying, embarrassing, and psychopathic.

So how crazy IS it to talk to yourself?

I don't find it very much so - after all, thinking is basically talking to yourself silently.

I've been listening to my mom do it for like 20 years. Still drives me a little crazy to hear her carry on a whispered conversation with herself.

Whispered? O_O goodness...

Ok, now that would add a creep level even for me.

She's usually vehemently arguing about something. It took me a while to realize it's a coping mechanism. When she's super ticked off about something or it's gnawing at her, she has to get the angst/anger/frustration out some way.

I've never quite understood it, but, I've got my own ways of coping that probably look a little crazy to everyone else.

I usually think by "writing" words in my head and then mentally speaking it to myself. I only actually speak to myself out loud when I have something particularly cool and pretentious to say and there's someone nearby to be mystified.  :P

By itself, talking to yourself isn't crazy at all -- there's plenty of reasons to do so that don't involve mental abnormalities of any sort, after all. When I'm living alone, ferex, I pretty often talk to the air a lot just to keep my voice from getting rusty. There's a fair number of voice training/maintenance related things that benefit notably from the such practices. Vocalization can also help fairly substantially when studying or trying to puzzle stuff out -- varying up how you're processing things can be beneficial for many people. Plenty of things along such lines. Vocalization is an effective tool for a buncha' stuff, audience or not. Plus singing and bits of theatre and whatnot is usually quite fun, especially when there's no audience :P

It can definitely be a symptom of insanity, though. S'just not necessary or sufficient on its own, nor terribly indicative of anything in and of itself.

There are degrees of craziness here.  Partially depends on how animated the 'talk' is, among other factors like are you responding back and forth with yourself and stuff.

The worst thing now is that with very small and unobtrusive Bluetooth earpieces, someone talking loudly and animatedly to no one in particular is not a clear sign of mental illness.

Still creeps me out though, even if they do have an earpiece.

now ask yourself - "how many of them have actually turned on their earpieces?"

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

talking to yourself isn't crazy.
talking to yourself convinced that you are talking to another person may be another matter.
