Adventure Mode: Intelligent Wilderness Creatures
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:39:20 am »

I'm trying to find a list of all the Intelligent Wilderness Creatures to find one I like and see how playing one feels, but I can't seem to find a list, so I really don't know what I"m getting into with any race I pick. Specifically I currently would like to find a medium armor wearing humanoid creature with wings and arms. I'm not fully set on this, so if I happen to see something else very interesting I might pick that, but I can't find any information on this area to know one way or the other. :/

Haven't seen such a list as of yet. Best I could think of at the moment is to look through the (not as of yet complete) DF wiki entry for creatures and sort the list by playability or size. Note, that not all worlds will generate every single kind of defined animal people, so this list varies each game.

As for your criteria, I'm imagining "medium sized" is either dwarf sized, human sized, and anything in between? If so, then I can assure you that there's absolutely no flying animal creatures with such specifications, with every single example being only half as large as a human.

EDIT: Whoops. Sorry about the wrong link.

Pretty much any entry on a non-vermin creature will have a drop-down list at the bottom.

I think this is the appropriate place to share two things about playing as intelligent wilderness creatures:
#1: carnivores (such as tiger men) cannot in fact eat fruit or vegetables.  Not sure why I expected they could.
#2: If you play as a jumping spider man this does not give you the ability to survive jumping as hard as you can out of the top of a tree.

I am quite looking forward to the next 20 or 30 years or so of developmental madness

In fortress mode, tiger men also couldn't eat cooked meat, so you had to keep raw meat around for them or they would starve. I haven't tested it with adv-fort yet, but I assume it applies the same to CARNIVORE adventurers.

Also, being a CARNIVORE still doesn't permit you to eat sentients.

EDIT: Now I've tested it, and I was able to cook and eat: biscuits made of two kinds of meat, biscuits made of 1 meat and 1 leaf vegetable, and stew made of 2 kinds of meat and river spirits. Haven't tried eating a meatless meal; not enough in season and I'm not that eager to anyway.

Wait, you can cook in Adventure mode? Or is this mods?

Can't cook in vanilla, but that's with dfhack's adv-fort plugin. And adventurer-built kitchen creates the same meals that a fortress kitchen would, so if an adventurer can eat those, they could eat the same thing from a retired fort.

Tested and found that CARNIVORE adventurers can't eat meals with a fruit or veg as the main ingredient. Using them as filler ingredients is fine.

If you build animal-man armour (in a fortress), can it be worn by any animal-man the same size?
Was going to mod elephant-man masks to protect the trunk (arena tests show that it's the first part to go sailing off in an arc) but then got to wondering if that means they'll be able to pick up a mask made for some other animal-man of the same size (is there anything?) and have automatic trunk protection, which wouldn't be very good.

I don't think so. Each individual race is selectable, and items made this way will have "fitted for ____" in their description.

Oh, that's good to know. Elephant-man's trunk seems to be the only unprotected animal-man part. Even bird-men's wings are somehow protected by mail shirts. Tusks too I suppose, but they seem to be naturally armoured.
