Can you take a Fortress and build like in DF mode?
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:35:37 am »

Basically the title. Can I, as an adventurer, take control of a Fortress or town, and begin building it like I would in Fortress mode? What happens to my adventurer?

Yes, to a smaller scale, naturally. The adv-fort plugin is packaged with dfhack, and you can use that to do almost everything in adventurer mode that a fortress dwarf could do. Gather herbs, gather webs, tame animal don't seem to work, and I've never tried farming, but I doubt it or anything that requires animal handling would work.

I also haven't tried building and using siege weapons, but I hadn't actually considered it until now.

Yes, but the DFhack version is much more limited.

You can visit fortresses as an adventurer in vanilla, then reclaim them if they are abandoned by starting fortress mode. I don't know if you can retire at a ruin, and I'm not sure what will happen to your character if you do. With a little raws tweaking, this can also be done with humans, goblins, elves, etc, provided you make their civ playable.

I don't know that it's possible to take control of a Fortress. If there's a room you can make a secure claim in, it's not any of the obvious places. But when you take control of a town or hamlet, you get nothing but a title and recognition from the locals. The only powers you get are to appoint hearthpeople and offer or demand tribute from other groups.

so on study on towns, nah the game only allows ruins of fortresses or fortress entrances to be taken over via reclaim.
so unless you make it so all sites are forts you can't reclame it.
also on the adventure mode in fort mode.
it's possible but it's basically you start on the fort site thus you already become a citizen and apart of the Group which is required for you to have a fully functional adventurer unit in fort mode.
any thing else would lead to the character being either assignable to rooms, occupations, noble settings but no labors, complete removal of any option to control the character but still have them as a civilian,
or the worst their assign an occupation but their counted as hostile and stuck in the others group which means they just stand around and protect the fort from invaders from time to time.

I know there's a talk option for site owners to agree or disagree to allowing a person to join a site so it might be possible to retire the character then assign them a noble position if possible and appoint long term agreements to other adventurers who attempt to join the site.... or just end up hitting the assign occupations but no way to control them.

also do note I got this from vanilla spawning a snakelady on top of a retired fort then retiring her instantly which work for her well.
I had a scorpion person from the same fort civ wander to the fort site and got the first option
third was an elephant man who just kinda died on the spot so I can't tell.
and the last option was 42.01 with a spider-woman necromancer.

also reclaiming a town or any of those sites is killer on pcs given how HUGE THEY ARE like 16 x 16
