Oceanus nods.
"Well, yeah. Animals are always innocent, so they don't deserve abuse."

"Indeed it is."

A myriad of conflicting emotions played prologue, story and epilogue on Morganas face and Oceanus was certain that whatever nerve he just hit, it ran deep and grew long, dendtritic roots. A full minute passed, before Morgana came to an answer.

"Well suit yourself."

Oceanus nods and, after a moments thought realizes that the easiest way to test whether it will try to eat him is to just stick a pinky finger into the cage. If it bites, there's the answer.

Death does not differentiate between the brave and the foolheardy. And despite his usualy calm exterior, Oceanus could not help but notice a steady increase in heartrate. A pulsing, that grew ever more in intensity, as his hairs stood to attention triggered by ancient survival instincts. In times before mans ascension through wit, shedding his primitive ape-like fur in exchange for wisdom and dignity, it was a mechanism of defence, to appear bigger and stronger in front of a rival. This curious relict, passed down from thousands of generations crossed his mind as his hand slowly, but steadily made it towards the cage. And in thousands and thousands of generations, the imperative of nature helped his ancestors survive, live on long enough to pass their seed unto the next generation, living, dying, multiplying. That one day his nugatory life might become more than an echoless glimpse of immeasurably short time in the grand scale of the cosmos.

Would he be the last of that line if he ignored this instinct now, trying to disprove a million years of evolution, just for idealism? Could he stand in the ashes of a million past forefathers and proudly accept their judgement head held high?

Oceanus considers all of this. Then with a resounding 'oh right, my ancestors were assholes' bravely sticks the proferred finger into the cage.

Against all instincts of nature, Oceanus offered his finger as a sacrifice, a lamb of slaughter to the bloodthirsty gods of curiosity. But the dreaded - or desired -  reaction never came. The arcane bird never moved. No twitch. No tilting of the head. Not a single moment of acknowledgement. It's eyes blinked, but the pupils remained unmoving and dilated, shaded over with the dullness of a hundred years of oblivion. Eyes blinking, lungs breathing, a beating heart. All controled by the dorsomedial hyphothalamic nucleus. A part of the brain barely the size of an almond in men, surely smaller than the head of a matchstick in a bird. The unstoppable clock inside your head, in charge of involuntary automatic processes, submitting you into slavery of the unrelenting master that is called survival. It was even older than the amygdala, master of fear. And now, when everybody else had already left the stage, it alone held dominion in this feathered husk. The lights were still on.

But no one was home.

Oceanus leaves the finger for a few seconds before withdrawing it. With a sigh he withdraws the finger. Then after a few seconds of thought he opens the cage door.

The door opens without further protest, but the creaking of the ancient hinges would not rouse the bird from his waking slumber. Apathetic to its surroundings to the degree of a eon-long coma, it remained sitting where it has, in all memory that might have remained in its now empty soul, has always been sitting. It had forgotten how to move, it had forgotten the dire and the need to move, and had forgotten how to remember.

"That...is pretty depressing actually. I'd prefer if it went pecking for your finger now...Do you think it can even tell we are here?"

Oceanus shrugs to the question. After a few moments of waiting he gently retrieves the bird from the cage, holding it to his side loosely.

A kind heart got the better of him, and Oceanus extended his fingers to free the poor and broken spirit. It was not just the intense pain, but the ear-wrenching, toenail-curling hiss of rapidly evaporating water that spills from organic tissue when pressed against an intense heatsource. Screaming in pain Oceanus dropped the bird, which dropped to the ground in an awkward, perhaps painful position, in which it remained unflinching like a doll, a toy that has been dropped by a careless child, no more alife than whatever imagination and loneliness the mind projects onto it.

Red as a cherry in some parts, and eerily white in others, Oceanus may have shattered a molar trying to grit his teeth in a pitiful attempt to bear the pain, but no amount of selfcontrole could stiffle this impulse of nature, similarly in age and in aspect to instinct. Morgana rushed to his aid immediatly, but could do little other than rest her hand on his shoulder and look at the burn with wide eyes.

"OH MY GOD ARE YOU ALRIGHT?"

Oceanus shakes his head as he falls to the floor clutching his arm.

"W-Wait I'll just.."

Morgana rummages through her pocket, and produces a pack of bandaids. She was already in the process of unpacking the first one, before she suddenly stopped, looking back and forth between the bandaid and the second degree burn covering a sizable area. Frustrated at the revelation of her own idiocy, she tosses them in the air in anger.

"What the hell am I thinking! W-we need to get you out of here and treat that, come, I'll help you up."
