Inns Race OOC: Early February
« on: January 03, 2016, 03:47:00 am »

Welcome, Bay 12, the the Inns Race Forum Game
This will be similar in nature to the Arms race forum game, but instead of competing nations, you will be competing businesses. It should be a lot simpler, rules-lite fare compared to that game though.

Here, you will join one of two inns, and compete for fame and fortune, while serving your patrons with food, drinks, stables, lodging, and some more drinks.

Inn 1 Thread: The Cannonball
Inn 2 Thread: Dicks Inn

It is Year 1 of the New Age. You are in the kingdom of Riameth, under King Riameth (yesterday it was Year 536 in the Age of the Bat, and it was the kingdom of Ochre Mountain under the Elf-Lord Shibito). The capital city, named Riameth City (formerly Xopouya) has a dire need for a new pub or two. It would be appropriate to back up a bit: King Riameth is a nice guy. He means well. Probably. When he conquered the Elven kingdom of Ochre Mountain he made a promise to the citizenry that their business would be allowed to continue as they were, before being brutally conquered. He also had the idea that in his new capitol city, alcohol would be prohibited. Grudgingly, though, he admitted that businesses with Elven Liquor Licenses would be allowed to continue to serve alcohol within the capitol city of Riameth. This is where you come in.

Now, liquor licenses are a relatively new thing in Elven government. Elves love to party, and consequently there are very few regulations on the sale of things which are drunk, smoked, chewed, inhaled, and so forth for entertainment purposes. Just last year, it was ordained that any if any proprietor of drinks had been found guilty of  the crime "Grossly Negligent Hygiene Violations Resulting in Death or Requiring Amputation for Customers" then, having served their sentence, said proprietor must submit to bi-monthly health inspections and receive a Liquor License before being allowed to serve drinks again. There were two such inns operating in Xopouya at the time of the invasion. Now, two inns are the only establishments in Riameth City allowed to sell alcohol.

If you can brave the thieves, looters, guards, taxes, health inspectors, the other inn, and the patrons themselves, there is a lot of money to be made.

Rules of the Game

In either Inn's thread, you may suggest what to do each turn, and vote in favor of other suggestions. Please stick to posting in one thread- you can read the other thread though, these are public businesses. Turns represent a month's time and occur in two phases:
-In the Buy phase, you can acquire new inventory (food and drinks) and make one improvement to your inn, which mostly means expanding and remodeling.
-In the Sell phase, you can choose how to advertise your inn, and you will get a report on your sales. You also learn of Quests in this phase, and can decide how to dole them out.
-After the Sell phase, you might have to make a decision about how to deal with a specific event, such as a robbery, bar fight, or contest.

Resources:
Your inn has Gold and Fame. Gold is spent on buying things and paying taxes- if you run out, you might be forced to close the inn. Fame brings patrons to your inn. Your inn also has various features that will be tracked: The exact nature of your rooms and building, and your knowledge, which you can see more about in the Inn threads themselves. You also have an inventory of drinks: there are two kinds of drinks, Well drinks and Call drinks. Well Drinks are generic drinks ("Rum, please!") and once you buy them, you never run out. Call Drinks are specific, higher quality drinks ("I'd like a bottle of Captain Redbeard's Spiced Rum!") You will buy and sell Call drinks in specific quantities, by the cask or bottle. Regular patrons mostly drink Well Drinks, while Heroes will often come seeking Call Drinks. When Heroes come during the Sell phase, you'll have to opportunity to give them Quests, and earn Fame if they succeed.

Your Patrons:
Riameth City is a major trade capitol of the world, and is visited by Humans (the main population of Riameth), Elves (the recently conquered population), Dwarves, Orcs, Gnomes, and more exotic patrons. All of these different groups have different drink preferences: For example, elves are primarily fond of wine and hallucinogens, humans of beer and cocktails, dwarves of beer and rum, orcs of the strongest rotgut they can find, and more that you'll learn as time goes on. Depending on your type of drinks and scenery, your inn may be favored in particular by a given race, and also professions such as thieves, farmers, wizards, warriors and nobles. The type of patrons you attract will make messes, start fights, steal from eachother, or demand particular features of your inn- for example nobles require very nice beds, or you could make extra money off of warriors with a boxing ring.

Events:
You will have to react to various things that are out of your control. Sometimes you will have to choose how to respond to events in your inn. King Riameth might pass you laws you need to follow, and WILL levy new taxes you have to pay- he would love it if you went out of business, as long as it doesn't look like he orchestrated it. You can also PM me about various secret actions one inn might take against another.

Winning:
If one inn goes bankrupt, the game is over. I'll probably come up with some other win condition or deadline later.

The first turn will be a little different.
Go look at the two Inn threads, and pick an Inn to join. Instead of buying things, you'll spend your first turn choosing the name of the inn, and the name and race of your manager, a character shared by the whole team.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

January: Buy Phase

122 Gypsum Road: The Cannonball

122 Gypsum Road is now The Cannonball. Outside hangs the sign, which is a literal cannonball suspended on a chain. The new manager is Urist Crankerverting, a dwarf with skill in Home Improvement, which allowed him to easily construct the structure which would support the cannonball's weight. It's pretty recognizable even in the crowded merchant district. The cellar is stocked with ale, in big kegs, served room-temperature in wooden tankards.

New Well Drink: Ale
New Skill: Home Improvement
Starting Money: 100 Silver
Starting Fame: 2

435 Sienna Road: Dicks Inn

435 Sienna Road is now Dicks Inn. The original plan was to involve wordplay but the new manager, an elf by the name of Troy Hagger, does not have the Literacy skill. A couple of dicks painted on the door will have to do. The shed is stocked with apple cider in clay jugs. Troy brews it himself, and it's better than average. It too is served in wooden tankards. Since it's January, cider fetched from the shed is quite cold.

New Well Drink: Good Apple Cider
New Skill: Cider Knowledge
Starting Money: 100 Silver
Starting Fame: 1

Let the Sell phase begin!
You each have only one well drink, and nothing in the way of special recipes to try. You can hire a crier for 20 silver pieces, who will shout to the crowd advertising your inn with a slogan of your choice. For 30 silver, you can hire a writer to make a written banner with a slogan, which may attract people who can read to your inn. You can also make up a slogan and shout it outside yourself, but this is less effective as still have to spend a lot of time actually working inside. There is also someone advertising reading lessons for 100 silver, which will grant Literacy to your manager.

Bewarned! If no employees take actions soon, you may be levied with an Unattended Establishment Tax!
I would, but I hate the name of the inn. Letting it die is a mercy kill from my view.

Hastily painting over the door and thinking of a new name could be a valid action. ;)

Can't understand your hate on the word. Its clearly some joke wordplay at work.

I'm fine with jokes. I fine if the joke is 'haha, dicks'. I'm fine when the joke is going to stick with us for a whole game.

I draw the line when it both 'haha dicks' and it going to stay with us for the whole game.

Too salty, you lot need to relax!

The name of the inn can change at any time, if the majority votes in favor. Normally this re-branding, while potentially beneficial, could also come at a loss in fame, but if people are so terribly unsatisfied with Dicks Inn then I'll give you a freebie. Right now it looks like the majority (if evilcherry voting for the new name also counts as rescinding his vote for the original name) is in favor of renaming the inn The Dancing Elf, and so it shall be when I update tonight.
