Unquenchable Desire, meet Unattainable Object
« on: December 31, 2015, 10:21:38 am »

So, I'm sure this is a problem others have addressed, might qualify as a bug, but if nobody minds I thought I'd ask...

Somewhere, deep in the depths of my fort, there is an unreachable item. For some reason, the fort has decided that it must be obtained. I've been getting a barrage of cancellation spam as dorfs pick up the job and promptly drop it like a hot potato.

Is there a way to use a menu to figure out what the offending item is so I can forbid it or find a way to dispose of it?

I've tried looking at the jobs menu, but of course that lets you zero in on the dorf, not the item, and it's not clear of the many haul jobs which one is the culprit. I strongly suspect it's a troglodyte part slowly disintegrating in a cavern lake, and look forward to either forbidding it or subjecting it to incineration.

You can't easily find the item I guess, but if the dwarfs can't path to something they should not attempt to take the job. There might be a water reservoir with 3-4 filling that leads to the object. When there is a way through depth 3 water, the job is taken. When the depth is suddenly 4, the job is cancelled.

Do you have any burros or civilian alerts?

I've noticed that civilian alerts result in constant job cancellation spam, since dwarves will keep taking jobs that require them to leave the alert burrow, then cancel them because they are in a forbidden area.

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".

I have one burrow for emergencies, and it's not active on at the moment.

Whenever this has happened to me, it's because flowing water has carried an item near a spot where a river exits the map, so the item (or the path to it) keeps being blocked by 4-deep water, then reappearing. Finding these spots can be a bit of a chore in the case of cavern rivers.

So, in that case, find the object and forbid it?

I'll check into that next time I start up.

Worst case nuclear option?  Forbid the entire map, then unforbid the part your fort occupies.  Would be a little annoying, but possibly less so than actually finding the rogue item.

Sometimes I trace this to a cave swallow remains (or other vermin) stuck on top of a tower cap. Theoretically a hauler could path to it by climbing the wall, i guess, but they do not. So then I make it a {cave swallow remains} and they stop caring about it.

Or it could be a boulder or a shoe that fell down a cliff, same kind of problem. Forbidding the entirety of the caverns could help troubleshoot, as another person suggested.

If you can catch the job before it's cancelled you can identify which stockpile they wan to haul it to (e.g. #14). The stockpiles are included in the room list, so you can then zoom to the stockpile to find out what kind it is (if it isn't a single type stockpile, in which case the job would be to haul to refuse stockpile #14).
It won't solve the problem, but might provide a small piece in the puzzle.
