Tree cutting when submerged in water

From my understanding you should be able to choose any part of a tree to be cut and that will take down the whole tree. I've an issue where some underground trees have the base of their trunks in water. So I built floor over the water out to the tree but I'm not able to designate any portion of it for cutting other than the section that is submerged.

I'd rather not sacrifice a dwarf to the cause of digging under it to ramp up directly below the tree but I'm starting to think that's my only option. Anyone else have an idea?

IIRC you can design only trunk-type tiles, not things like branches or leaves.

Other ways:
  • get rid of water first (digging from side/under, pumps, buckets, magma...)
  • use ballista (ballista bolt can turn any tree to pile of matches)
  • cave in the area?
  • use floor/bridges to get to the tree (may not work here if you don't have any trunk tiles above water)
  • just burn it (magma again)

you've given me so many options that I'd forgotten about thank you. I suspect that because this "tree" is an underground mushroom the only part available to me is considered leaves.

I'm going to ballista the fek out of this tree.

Unfortunately, a number of Detros' recommendations aren't that good:
- Detros is slightly wrong in details when it comes to using a ballista: the tree isn't turned into a pile of matches, but is disintegrated totally (including leaving a hole in the water where the tree stood. That hole is filled up if waves are created).
- Causing a cave-in on top of a tree does NOT work. The cave-in will be suspended by the smallest twig of the tree, rather than smash it.
- Reachable branch tiles above water works if the tree is a kind that has reachable branches (some do, some don't). There is also a risk of the wood cutter getting killed in the process by being swept into the water by the splash of the logs.
- Magma doesn't work. Cave trees can grow in magma, and if you pour magma on top of them you can start a fire that will burn the twigs and can set fire to the cave moss, but the trunk remain unaffected. I've heard fires can occasionally destroy a (surface) tree, but I've never seen it myself.

A lake without edge contact can be drained, as Detros said. The easiest way is to dig a tunnel to the edge, carve a fortification in the edge, and then channel down so the lake drains into the tunnel. Magma doesn't work that well for the complete process, because you can't reach the water underneath the tree's branches. You can, of course, obsidianize everything around it and then channel the obsidian so the water can pour out, spread, and evaporate, though.

My primary solution is disintegration through ballista. When the blocking trees are out of the way I can then proceed to obsidianize the submerged cavern entrances (my main reason for wanting to get rid of trees in water. The other one is to dislodge campers, but they tend to just move to another tree).

That magma/cavein idea was to modify terrain around enough so the trunk can be reached. Also, magma, just because we are talking about dwarves :D .

A portable drain is probably slightly easier, yes. I haven't yet tried this newfangled technology, though.

If you've got reachable branches obsidianization/cave-in could be alternatives to a floor/bridge, yes. And I agree magma should award you dwarfiness points. Unless we're talking about a young tree without branches, you can rarely reach the trunk above the (wet) ground level however. Still, obsididanization followed by channeling should allow your dorf access to the foot of the tree.
