(lawastooshort) Nigel:

Time... for HARVEST! First, Nigel counts how many plants seem to be viable...

[4](-20% stiff ground)(+50% DEVOTION) = 4.8 potential

He then kneels on the ground and starts digging up the herbs. Each plant must be mostly intact, from major roots to stem to leaves, and if Nigel messes up the usable portions of each plant rapidly decrease.

[2]
vs
[4] difficulty

Unfortunately, these stiff herbs are also more brittle than it seems, and he snaps more than one in half. He ends up with a handful of ASSORTED PLANT MATTER and a single stiff sunshine herb. :(

+2 assorted plant matter
+1 stiff sunshine herb

(darkpaladin) Mergol:
Mergol tends to the crops ...
[2] = 2 potential

... It seems this harvest is pretty barren.

2
vs
2 difficulty

Mergol also accidentally severs the root of one of the plants. Even if base herbs are almost literally grass, they too need some skill when being collected.

+1 base herb
+1 base herb seed
+1 assorted plant matter

(nirur) Phil:
Phil politely asks for a full seven point repair.

"Righty, let's do this!" The blacksmith takes out a heavy-looking hammer and readies to strike.
[6] The blacksmith hammers the hoe! It recovers 2 durability, and loses the RUSTY modifier! Phil is pretty sure that rust doesn't work like that, but he doesn't mention it. "Haha, I knew I can blacksmith," mutters the blacksmith under his breath. (Phil only needs to pay for one repair's worth)
[1] The blacksmith hammers the hoe, but misses and instead hits the shaft! -1 max durability. "Whoops," he says. "I won't charge you for that!"
[5] The blacksmith continues to repair the hoe. It recovers 1 durability.
[6] The blacksmith seems to have gotten the hang of repairing things. Not only does the hoe regain 2 durability, it also starts glowing with a dim green aura. 10% chance to SMITE undead for double damage! Unfortunately, the ground is not undead.
[2] With a loud clang sound, the blacksmith accidentally breaks off the tip of the hoe. -1 max durability. He looks sheepish.

Final result: the 1/8 durability RUSTY IRON HOE has become a 6/6 durability GREEN IRON HOE ("Of retribution!" the blacksmith insists) IRON HOE OF RETRIBUTION! Phil only has to pay 3 points' worth of repairs, or 30 bronze.

While losing the RUSTYness was great, and the RETRIBUTION part a nice touch, Phil feels mildly cheated.

Phil also buys the SMALL IRON HAMMER. 40 bronze left.

Because each turn is as elastic as reasonble, Phil also has time to do a test run! He crushes the assorted plant matter further with the new SMALL IRON HAMMER and tosses it into the cauldron along with water and stirs.

[2](+20% meteoric iron) = 2.4
vs
[1]

Success! Phil now has a vial of PLANT MATTER STEW. It smells exactly like a grass stew would smell.

+1 potionmaking XP.

(Flying Dice) Roland:

[1] While planting the seeds and cuttings, the ground rises up!

[4](-50% loamy) = 2
vs
[1](+50% DETERMINATION) = 1.5

It attempts to knock the seeds out of Roland's hands, but it misses and instead deals 0.5 damage to Roland.

The ground looms menacingly...

Spoiler: statuses (click to show/hide)

He's back! Better, faster, stronger than ever and out with a vengeance... because this time, it's personal.

Plant the seed, then try to find some sort of shop or market.

Golem Plans:
1. Collect a contrary plant (not a specific plant, just one that grows upside-down or eats meat, for example), a mana herb, and some mashed up flammable material (NOT the fire seeds; they burn eternally, and may permanently deaden the clay to magic).
2. Mix the above ingredients up, possibly with some oil.
3. Pour the above (hopefully anti-magic) mixture over some clay, and light it on fire.
4. Mix the mixture and the clay as it burns.
5. After it burns, scoop out the inert clay before the earth reabsorbs it.
6. Shape the inert clay into a golem-shape, and insert a paper marked with the Hebrew word for "Truth," possibly written in Mana Herb paste.
7. Enjoy your free 24/6 (the golem shouldn't work on Saturdays, according to legend) labor.

Beat that ground into submission. A true man cannot be cowed by a single setback!

Hmm, well.

"Water? Mana? Elementals? Eh?" says Nigel, rubbing his beard. "What?"

Got to town and see if I can buy at least two units of oil. If I can't, return and dig some furrows.

(nirur) Phil:

Since Phil now has more tools to work with, he can complete two out of three recommended steps, as described in Ye Olde Booke.

~~~
Potionmaking can consist of anywhere between one and three steps.
The only required step is mixing, but (1) crushing the herbs and (2) extracting them, via certain additives to the mixture enhance the potion production.
-- Ye Olde Book
~~~

Phil first uses the small iron hammer and the cutting board to crush the mana herbs into a paste.
[2](+10% small iron hammer)(+50% DEVOTION) = 3.3

He does an adequate job.

Next up is mixing! The paste and some water is put into the cauldron and mixed vigorously.

[5](+50% devotion)(+20% cauldron)(+10% potionmaking) = 9.9
vs
[3](+0 potion difficulty) = 3

Phil produces three small mana potions!

+1 XP to potionmaking!

(darkpaladin) Mergol:

[3](-25% rusty hoe) = [2.25]
vs
[4](+25% rocky) = [5]

Mergol tries to dig some holes to put the seeds in, but they immediately close back up as soon as he lifts his hoe. The fact that the ground is fairly rocky doesn't help, either. At least it's not actively trying to kill him... what to do?

What kind of shops is Mergol looking for?
[5] Unless further specified, Mergol will locate the shop of Hopes and Dreams.

(Flying Dice)Roland:

Faced with an alien foe of unfathomable strength and vitality... Roland is filled with determination!

[1](+50% DETERMINATION)(-25% rusty) = [1.12]
vs
[4](-50% loamy) = [2]

Unfortunately, determination cannot surmount all odds. The ground lashes at Roland ... [4] and strikes his hoe instead of Roland himself! It takes [6](-50% loamy)=3 damage. The hoe breaks into half and loses 1 max durability. The only reason it didn't do even more damage is because this ground in question was quite soft and full of nutrition.

What to do now?

(lawastooshort)Nigel:

[3] What kind of oil does Nigel want?

(assuming nigel wants to furrow the grass patch)
[3](-25% rusty)=2.25
vs
[1](-25% drains well)(+100% grassy) = 3

The grassy ground is still a bit too tough to completely clear. Nigel's RUSTY HOE still makes some progress, though, and its GRASSY bonus is reduced to 75%.

The entire point of making servants was so that you DIDN'T have to furrow the ground (and thus anger the earth).

((That answers my unspoken question about whether seeds would be auto-gathered, and if they enhanced potions. Now we know.))

Hoe that earth. Or plant my remaining seeds if the status is correct and it's still furrowed.

As long as it's not the shop of Crushing Hopes and Dreams, it'll do just fine.

Oh dear. Still, it wouldn't do to surrender while crops are in the ground! Have at thee, foul earth!
