Nigel will give the Earth a gentle soothing pat and wander off to Scavenge for some interesting herbs!

He looks behind him as he walks off.

We all have our duties.
You to grow, me, to toil.
Gentle now, this must be done."

edit: oops, the post body got lost.

(Flying Dice) Roland:

Roland confidently walks up to the patch of dirt he calls his own, and readies a mighty swingfurrow action with his RUSTY IRON HOE.

[5] Roland absently notices that his patch of land is a bit LOAMY.

[1](+50% DETERMINATION)(+25% Good Feeling)(-25% rusty) = 1.4
vs
[2](+50% uncultivated)(-50% loamy) = 1.5

He is mildly perplexed at the fact that even though his RUSTY IRON HOE is drawing furrows in the ground, it seems that as soon as he takes a break from the hard work, the furrows become shallow... After a minute or two, the ground is as flat and unbroken as it was before he starting furrowing it. :(

(lawastooshort) Nigel:

[5] He pats the ground and it rumbles appreciatively. Interesting.

He then wanders off into the conveniently located LUSH FOREST behind the village. It is called the LUSH FOREST because, despite it being a temperate climate, it is always sweltering inside the forest year-round. This also means there are many, many interesting herbs inside. Very interesting, even.

[3] After an hour of search, Nigel only finds a clump of base herbs. Like grass, but edible! +2 base herbs.
[2] Another hour later, Nigel discovers a DEATHBLOOM! Reknown for its particular taste and the sense of impending doom it gives the one who has eaten it. It also tends to melt into a puddle of toxic chemicals if kept in a normal sample bag. Nigel marks its position down to come back later with the proper tools.

Explore more?

(darkpaladin) Mergol:

Mergol takes an extended break for the afternoon. (user did not post!)

(Nirur) Phil:

Phil attempts to soothe the earth further with song! (Said earth, on close observation, [4] seems to DRAIN WELL.)

[2](+50% DEVOTION)(+100% CALM EARTH) = 6
vs
[2](+50% DEVOTION)(+100% CALM EARTH) = 3 = [3]

The earth falls asleep! On the positive side, it's not trying to murder your precious iron hoe. On the negative side, it's even harder to till the dirt...

[4](+100% CALM EARTH) = 8
vs
[1](-25% Drains well) = .75

... but a non-murderous earth is a good earth, and Phil succeeds in drawing a few lines in it! It is ready for planting.

Plant the mana herb seeds.

(Typos: I have a "path of dirt," and the roll modifiers to my first combat roll are pretty odd.)

This earth... it will not defeat him! Continue to work at digging furrows!

(nirur: to be entirely honest I don't even remember what the combat bonuses were, but the result is correct!)

(Flying Dice) Roland:

Roland takes another swing at the ground! It shall not continue to defy his will!

[5](+50% DETERMINATION)(+25% goodfeeling)(-25% rusty) = 7
vs
[1](+50% uncultivated)(-50% loamy) = 0.75

The ground finally gives way and is FURROWED.

(lawastooshort) Nigel:

Nigel continues to explore!

[1] Unfortunately, the sun seems to immediately set.
[6] On the plus side, Nigel trips over a branch and stumbles onto a rare snake, accidentally crushing its skull with his leather boots. +1 RARE SNAKE CORPSE!

He drags the snake, which has colorful bands of black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, gray, white, gold, and silver and is about the side of one of his legs, all the way back home.

+1 XP for EXPLORATION.

(darkpaladin) Mergol:

Mergol empties his packet of base herb seeds and mana herb seeds into the meteoric iron cauldron, applies heat, and stirs.

[2](+50% DESTINY) = 3

The result is two uses of DUBIOUS SEED POTION. Nobody knows what it does ...

+1 XP for POTIONMAKING.

(Nirur) Phil:

Phil plants the tiny seeds of the mana herb. Its sprouts stick out of the ground shortly. He feels that it is wise not to question the growth speed of plants in this world.

+1 XP for FARMING.

Soon, the ground will wake up again, and the little mana herbs will need protection...

Success! Renewed by his victory over the base earth, Roland continues to work.

Sow herb seeds in the furrow. 3/4 base, 1/4 bloody.

Hmm. Go to a shop and see if I can't get some potion making equipment with my 100 coins. If not possible, get an early night's sleep to prepare for foraging tomorrow.

(Flying Dice) Roland:

Roland carefully doles out a quarter of his bloody herb seeds, spiky little balls, and three quarters of his base herb seeds. He shoves them into the ground and gives them a little pat. They rapidly develop sprouts!

+1 XP to FARMING

(darkpaladin) Mergol:

Mergol goes exploring in the BRIGHT PLAINS bordering the LUSH FOREST. Gently rolling hills, little to no trees and many low bushes make for a fertile ground for finding herbs.

[3] Mergol finds a handful of base herb seeds.
[3] Also a handful of snowberries.

+1 XP to EXPLORATION.

(Nirur) Phil:

Phil doesn't trust the land one bit, and stands guard...

[1](+100% calm earth) = 2
vs
[3]

And he was right not to trust it! The ground, after noticing that Phil hasn't moved for a while slowly reaches out some dirt tendrils to strangle and crush the fragile mana herb sprouts. Phil swings the hoe on the dirty dirt!

[3]
vs
[6](-25% drains well)=4.5

Unfortunately, while his swing was good enough to deter the dirt for now, the rusty iron hoe is just not up to the task and takes 1 damage from a strategically placed rock. It now has 1 durability left.

The mana herb shoots grow and become YOUNG PLANTS. Once they are mature (next "turn", whatever a turn is) they can be harvested!

(lawastooshort) Nigel:

Hmm, Nigel says to himself, perhaps it would be useful to have actual tools to make potions with.

He heads towards the village's market.

[2] It is after dark, though, and all the markets are closed. And being a bit of an eccentric scholar, Nigel doesn't have the connections necessary to interrupt somebody's meal midway.

On the plus side, he does pick up a half-fired clay pot from the cooling ashes of the kiln. It seems like the pottery has a large piece missing from the rim, but the rest of it is useful enough. It has only three durability though.
