Or magic.
Probably magic.
We've already seen odd things.

You wait for the animal to finish easting the berry. It quickly does so, and then goes back to you. You wait some time, and the animal doesn't seem affected at all. With relief, you pick one berry and eat it. It is sweet, albeit with a bit of acidity in its flavor. Still, it is nice, and your stomach doesn’t protest. You wait some more time, and it seems that the shrub is safe to eat from. You gather a couple fistfuls of berries and eat them. A single hard and apparently inedible seeds is in the center of all of them, and you gather them all, just in case. With your hunger sated for now, you notice that the brightness of the Sun has receded noticeably, its yellow color now replaced by white. The Moon. Yet, it is still in the same place the Sun used to be, as if the bright orb didn't move at all.

~As the Guardian falls into slumber, its connection and care for Life enter sleep too. And thus the unnatural may rise, from where life used to be.~

Maybe it should be time to get back to your shelter.

You go back to your shelter, and fortunately remember your way; it is not too far from here. The forest is different at moonlight; the shadows are bigger, the shapes less defined. You can no longer discern between the various shapes of the shrubs, even less notice objects lying on the floor. The creature follows you, without you having to order it around. It seems that it likes you, and you can't help but to smile a little bit. You arrive to your shelter, and find it just as you left it. It should suffice for this night, or at least you hope so. You lean to sleep, the creature staying awake some more time, sniffing and digging some things you now don't care to look about. After some time it stops, and eventually lays near you to sleep, and you succumb to your drowsiness.

You are floating, yet again, but this time not in water. Instead, you are suspended atop the volcano, a molten fury below you, the blue sky above with its bright orb shinning strongly, and emptiness on the horizon. As the sea eventually gives in to the fog, the fog itself gives in to nothing, but an empty white space. The moving mountains in the distance, all seem to be attached to islands of their own. A single mountain per island, a volcano of their own. They move, and their islands move with them. Some of them collide for some moments, only to depart on their way after some time. An archipelago. A drifting archipelago.
~The raging fire gives way to substance~
~The bright guardian creates and takes care of life~
~And which is and which is not at the same time, gives purpose, motion, knowledge... the immaterial~

You wake up to the squeak of your little friend. You bump your head with the sticks of your shelter, and crawl out. Your friend is near a tree looking frightened. A man covered in furs is looking at it, with a rough metal knife in his hand. He is covered in different furs, and he is sweating a little from the heat.

"Don't you fucking touch him!"

Swing the stick at him, afterwards try to get between the man and our little friend.

You quickly leap in the defense of your friend, brandishing the stick as you step between the mammal and yourself. The man watches you in confusion for an instant, as your companion hides between your legs.

"Really?" The man says with frustration. He has an untidy beard and the furs he is wearing are rudimentary, and definitely not suited for the temperate climate you have faced here in your only day of existence here. Still, he lowers his makeshift metal knife:

"Didn't really know it was yours" He says, making an apologetic gesture. "I didn't see anyone in the island in the past few weeks, and I have been here since the last collision. So, you have been recently born, right?" He says, with some degree of understanding of the situation in his voice.

"Hehe, your confusion makes it evident enough. Not that, well, your holdings didn't already tell me that." The man said, pointing at your shelter. “So, I guess that I should explain... hmm... everything, right? I remember the confusion when I appeared, I was not as lucky as you, in my island it snowed, as I was as naked as you are now. So, let's begin with something: have you heard the whispers yet?"

Your little companion doesn't seem so frightened now, and dares to step away from your legs, if only a few of its diminute steps.

I assume he means us, so yeah. Unless he means the other things (the ones in italics).

"Well, if at least is something similar, it should still saves a lot of time. So, let's see..." The man strokes his unkempt beard, thinking for a moment. "You are an Aetherborn, just as the rest of the people you may encounter. You materialized just as every other animal, with the difference that the Aether gave you purpose, intelligence. If you sensed some kind of whisper, it was because you peered into the Aether, the fog around every island, and the void that fills everything between, because the Sea is nothing more than the more material aspect of it. Besides the Aether, there is the Sun, the Bright Guardian of Life, who brings and takes care of the living things. And, last, there are the minor entities that kind of represent the more physical aspects of existence, the volcanoes of every island. They kind of make the matter, and thus the island itself. They can be manipulated on a certain way, and one can even learn from them. Thanks to this island's volcano I have this knife" He says, happily showing off the crude iron blade strapped with fur to make a rudimentary handle.

He scratches his head. "I don't know if I made it clearer for you. Probably not, but I can't blame you, I was probably even more confused than you when I appeared." He pauses for a moment, and asked: "So, do you have a name, or, well, have you decided on one? I'm Kadras, by the way, but I guess that a name is just the way to identify you."

Sam.
I suppose surnames are not a thing. We can always assume one later, if needed.
