You postpone feeding yourself for a brief time to capitalize on the fact that you have a scorching bit of metal at hand. As it is lying over a patch of dirt, rather than leaves, it hasn't set anything on fire. So, you gather some leaves (because you still dare not move it with your own hands) and put them over it, hopefully they will catch fire. Unfortunately, what you grabbed were some muddied leaves that, instead of catching fire, served instead to absorb the heat and dissipate it. You make a mental note to not to look for dry leaves near the spot where you looked for clay in the pond.

With that failure in mind, you tear off a stick from a tree, fairly nondescript as far as sticks go, and venture into the forest. Along the way, you notice several things that the rush for water at the start of the day didn't allow you to think about. First, that the forest is mainly composed of different trees, none of them exceedingly tall, with some of them bearing some kinds of hard nuts, or at least that is you can see from the ground. Second, that shrubs are abundant, but only in the areas that are less thick and allow the light to get to the ground. You haven't seen berries yet, but they could be possibility. Third, you have stumbled upon a hairy and small animal, barely bigger than the size of your fist that is searching for something on the ground. Your sub-par sneaking skills quickly make you noticed by the beast, but, oddly, it doesn’t run away. Instead, it seems almost curious about you, staring at you from afar with big eyes and sniffing with its tiny, pink muzzle.

The Sun is starting to shine less, but it remains at the same place at the sky.

Maybe throw the stick? Or pick up a particularly large pebble and huck it.

No killing.  Look for edible plants.

Remember this location, try to get some of those hard nuts from the trees, possibly find some kind of tuber, and if none of that works, we come back and kill the animal

-edit-
Only do that last option as a last resort

You decide to observe the small animal. It observes you back, and, as you stand still, it finds you to be non-menacing at all, and slowly comes closer to you. At first it sniffs your feet, something that tickles you, and you can't help but to crouch and pet the thing. It answers with affection, closing its big eyes and rubbing against your hands.

The moment is slightly interrupted as you feel a comforting warmth coming from the sky. You turn to see, and notice that a shrub nearby is being illuminated by the Sun, even in its waning state. The phenomenon continues as some small green rounded objects growing from it begin to swell, and then change to a strong blue color. Berries. One of them falls to the ground, and your little friend quickly jumps out of your hands to go and eat it.

Continue to observe. If our little friend dies, it's poisonous and we should avoid it. If he lives, we keep him and use the bush as temporary food source.

You are not even sure. It all started after you were enveloped by that fog.

Regardless of our sanity, we need to proceed in this land with extreme caution. Our little friend may be specially adapted to eat those berries, whereas it may be poisonous to us.
