Kids playing outside
« on: December 29, 2015, 06:36:20 am »

So in 42.xx kids like to play and they seem to like playing in random places. I can understand bedrooms, and they still seem to follow their parents somewhat so I can understand next to workshops. Next to the junk toy pile, but not the good toy pile, while annoying is just kids being kids. Even in the temporary water zone made sense. But I have never seen them play in the taverns which are also my dinning rooms or in the temples or in the library or when I moved the water zone to the nice new wells, they never played there.
But what seems like a step too far? They are now all playing on the surface next to the dead bodies of beaks dogs from the goblin siege I just beat. And their only unhappy thought? Nauseated by the sun. A page of feel nothing about various dead goblins and humans but the sun is annoying them.

I don't know whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, but if they were my kids I'd be shouting at them by now.

Hey, if it helps them get on the hardened individual - doesn't really care about anything anymore track, it's all good.

In real-life kids don't play in pubs, those are for Adults!, nor do they play in libraries, since those are places of quiet. If real-life children do not play in those places, way should dwarven kids? But the outside, the outside is a different matter. The outside is a vast area with little adult supervision and vast amounts of fun. Of course, in dwarf fortress that fun is often !FUN!, but how are kids meant to know that? So while annoying, dwarven children playing outside is completely realistic.

Know that i think about it, many parents in real life seem to think the outside world is full of !FUN!, perhaps you could find a dwarf who thinks that way, make them a scholar and have them start producing books telling of the dangers of the outside world and preaching the virtues of helicopter parenting, eventually turning your dwarves into a bunch of helicopter parents(It happened in the english speaking world, why not your fortress)

What's wrong with that? You've got a bunch of future corpse-haulers!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I've had kids play in temples. My very first fort of the new version was to test temples. I had about five mini temples set up when my first migration wave came. A couple and three kids. All the kids bolted to the death god temple to play make believe. None of them had that god as their diety, but out of the lot, he was the coolest god there.

Kids will be kids and have fun. Dwarven kids will be dwarven kids and have !FUN!. If you'd like to restrict their play to inside the fortress, you could assign them to a kid only borrow. Or let natural selection take care of the ones that wander where they shouldn't.

I'm tempted to try and set up a bit of Dwaven child care just to keep them all in one place.
I'm not having much luck with adult military training so maybe starting young is the way to go in this version.
Or at least sell all toys that aren't toy axes or hammers.

I had two kids play make believe in the pile of goblin corpses for more than a year.  Not even the snowstorm dissuaded them.

I had a kid play make believe in a pile of dwarf corpses from a failed quarantining effort.
It was a temporary suspended structure, and since there's no efficient and safe way to remove such things, I dropped it when I thought the kid was FINALLY gone.
She wasn't; she fell a great height, then a log that was falling with her cracked her skull.

You had goblin remains to play with? Man, you were lucky. We were so poor, the goblins wouldn't even look at us. We put a bunch of pyrite up on the roofs to try to fool them into thinking we had gold, but it only fooled the kobolds. Ever try to make a slinky out of kobold bones? Well don't bother, they're too brittle.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

In real life, babies aren't born with beards and you don't have to fight Santa Goblin Claus for your present.
