Navigating inside dwarven sites, dungeons, catacombs
« on: December 27, 2015, 03:44:19 pm »

Someone has trouble to find an exit inside dwarven sites (any of them but the hillocks), dungeons and catacombs? What I find difficult is the randomness of all of it. Most rooms and corridors doesn't seem to have a purpose so it's hard to have an idea of where you are and how you are going to leave that place.

I usually avoid the dungeons and catacombs completely because simply they aren't fun to explore. I want to know what others think about this problem.

uhh I just locate the noise then wander there mostly look for big 3 tile hallways usually that leads to stairs and follow any dwarf if you spot one they tend to migrate to the entrance.
usually I do the fast travel check if I really wanted out. if the check doesn't work I just realize I'm playing Cavern simulator 2016 for up until the character dies from cavern nonsense, and take my time as by the time I hit the surface with a dwarf their vomiting up their lunch and poor at combat and slow.

Dungeons have been boring since 40.xx, and sewers have become pointless. But 42.04 fixes should put crime organizations back below ground instead of immediately in the town. Catacombs can be worthwhile, some leaders get buried with a lot of wealth, possibly traps and mummies. There's really nothing to find in fortress workshops, but you may find some great quality dwarf-sized clothes in the apartments. The underground roads rarely have any challenge, and when they do, it's the worst kind; giant spider. Those are only good for shortcuts under mountain ranges.

libararies are in dwarven sites so if you feel like fort wanderlust you could search for one. might learn a not necromancy spell or two... I don't know if there is one.

God, I hope not. Necro towers are so sneaky with their titles, you can't tell whether it's just grandiose, or the book really has the secrets. The only fortress library I've seen was right on the top floor, a short walk from the tavern. No bodies on the floor, either.

I just skip the books and find the slab read straight from the source.

Yeah, if you're trying to avoid reading it, the slab is obvious enough. But any book in there might have it. It unless it has a character or site in the title, or anything 'Composition' then it's pretty unsafe. But those are just a bunch of bragging and/or bitching, so they're a waste of time.
