Nicatbem Ustosān, "Chainflute the Angry Clods", an iron crossbow

This is an iron crossbow. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is studded with iron.

On the item is an image of Chainflute the Angry Clods the iron crossbow in iron.

This artifact SOUNDS boring... Until you realize that the image of itself on it bears another image of itself, which bears another image of itself, and so on and so forth, making this artifact both hella confusing and artistically stunning. I would like to see someone with drawing skills tackle this, and how many images of the crossbow he or she'll be able to squeeze in :)

I'm picturing a spear-dwarf riding a giant swordfish stabbing a cyclops. Some creative license taken, since sailfin mollies are hardly seahorses.

Woo! I'm back. Sorry about that. I just kinda drifted away, and for a while, other things totally crowded out Dwarf Fortress. But now that I'm here again, I'd like to get back to work on some of these requests.

So, give me a while, I'll pick out something interesting, and post back when I've got something to show. :]

An old one, but a favourite of mine. I promised I would do this a long time ago - so here it is!

I did this in OpenCanvas. I've pretty much abandoned Photoshop for painting. One massive benefit of OpenCanvas, besides its amazingly realistic tools, is the ability to save 'Event' files that replicate the entire painting process from start to finish, exactly how you painted it.

So for those interested in how I paint, the Event file can be found here: http://www.soulsreach.net/misc/df_chain2.oe4

OpenCanvas is available as a free download, and is super lightweight (only a few mb!) - Get it here: http://wistinga.online.fr/opencanvas/

(If it's in Japanese, go to the last menu and switch to English. Then, in the View menu, pick a value for Wait - 2 or 3 are good speeds, otherwise it goes superfast)

P.S. I painted this in one session. MY HAND ACHES.

I'm curious, how long does the color take you VS.  the sketching inking and so on.

Sketching is the longest single step, because I'm constantly editing and re-drawing parts to get it to look right. You have some leniency in the colouring stage to experiment and have 'happy accidents'. I'd say the sketch took about 1.30 or 2 hours, and then I skipped the inking and just did that during the actual painting (which took 2 hours, which seems longer, but it's a much smoother process).

Also, I suck at bone decorations. :P

Well here is a picture of an old artifact I had. I spent at least ten minutes on it, so I hope you are happy...

It is a platinum bed that menaces with spikes of steel, fusing dwarven luxury and madness together.

Weepbusts - An alligator bone cage, worth 39600.

Encrusted with haematite.
Decorated with donkey bone and turtle shell.
Encircled with bands of alligator bone, donkey leather and willow.
Hanging Rings of donkey bone and turtle shell.
Menacing spikes of moss opal and birch.

He collected a grand total of ten items to build this thing. I was overjoyed when it turned out to be something useful and not an earring.

FYI, tiger iron isn't normal-colored iron like that. In fact, I don't believe it has any elemental iron at all. It's sort of glowy and banded and red-orange.
