Balance and fairness are literally meaningless and irrelevant in a single player game.
I already wrote a big-ass rant very relevant to this today, but I will just repeat what I said to myself in response to this (because this was just
that bad);
That is wholly untrue. Balance and fairness play a different role in singleplayer games - yes.
You can skew them more freely without anyone crying about some other
person having an unfair advantage due to the imbalance.
To say that they are "literally meaningless" would be a gross misunderstanding of what makes a single player game
fun.
I did say you can twist the balance more unfairly towards the player - that you can - but it is
vital to keep things fair and balanced to a degree where the player can still solve a very tricky situation. Because then they get to solve a very difficult situation.
Balance and fairness are
not irrelevant because the game randomly killing the player "because
fuck you" is no fun at all.
Which would be completely fair game if we were to say that these two things play no role at all, since
who cares if the player has
no chance of solving a situation due to massive imbalance - it's just a single player game! Try again! And again! And again for no other reason that
fuck your shit.
The RNG supplexing you and giving you the dick is only fun if your game is balanced enough to give a skilled player the possibility of performing a counter-suplex on the RNG and making it Suck It Down.
Really, they're really damn important to get right. The balance of imbalance is just a matter of adjusting the difficulty of the game.
Getting fucked over for
no reason is just no fun at all.
Because it wasn't your fault that you got fucked over, it is the fault of the game..
