Adding mounts in Adventure mode ?
« on: December 25, 2015, 11:58:55 am »

Horses (Human and Elf) , Spiders / Some other verming ( Goblin ) , Rams / Goats / Ponies ( Dwarf ) . These are just suggestions for basic mounts . I Think mounts should be used to make Adventure more interesting , faster travelling and cavalry combat would be awesome . IN VEEEEEEEEERY late updates if they would be already introduced adding some competitions like breaking lances or to add more medievalish stuff .

I'm pretty sure this is already planned. I think the current difficulty is deciding who's in control. Surely you can't make your mount go just anywhere you want. But it probably depends on the training of the animal, your skill, and your relationship with the specific animal. Really it's quite a bit more complicated than it sounds at first.

it's not even that more so the mounts system is already in the game and double in arena,
just that adventurers on mounts is basically giving up your movement control to the animal.

the mount system works like babies and mothers where babies are the riders and the mothers are the mounts.

While it's a fun idea, mounts would difficult to implement fairly. What races can mount which animals. I feel that a goblin riding a giant scorpion would absolutely dominate a human/horse enemy. What about armour for the mounts? How would that be implemented? Still, I really love the idea of adding mounts, it would completely change the strategy of war.

Balance and fairness are literally meaningless and irrelevant in a single player game.

That being said, the game already features and very interesting and unique mounts, all bound to specific races. Goblins ride
cave dragons and beak dogs for instance, while humans ride bears, camels, and horses. And woe is all who come across a platoon of elvish unicorn horse archers.

Since the game takes place in the late bronze age, horse armour / mount armour wouldn't be used.

I personally really wish that toady would just add it now, as all the systems seem to be in place.

Balance and fairness are literally meaningless and irrelevant in a single player game.
I already wrote a big-ass rant very relevant to this today, but I will just repeat what I said to myself in response to this (because this was just that bad);

That is wholly untrue. Balance and fairness play a different role in singleplayer games - yes.
You can skew them more freely without anyone crying about some other person having an unfair advantage due to the imbalance.

To say that they are "literally meaningless" would be a gross misunderstanding of what makes a single player game fun.
I did say you can twist the balance more unfairly towards the player - that you can - but it is vital to keep things fair and balanced to a degree where the player can still solve a very tricky situation. Because then they get to solve a very difficult situation.

Balance and fairness are not irrelevant because the game randomly killing the player "because fuck you" is no fun at all.
Which would be completely fair game if we were to say that these two things play no role at all, since who cares if the player has no chance of solving a situation due to massive imbalance - it's just a single player game! Try again! And again! And again for no other reason that fuck your shit.

The RNG supplexing you and giving you the dick is only fun if your game is balanced enough to give a skilled player the possibility of performing a counter-suplex on the RNG and making it Suck It Down.

Really, they're really damn important to get right. The balance of imbalance is just a matter of adjusting the difficulty of the game.

Getting fucked over for no reason is just no fun at all. Because it wasn't your fault that you got fucked over, it is the fault of the game..

but losing is Fun.
and getting fucked in dwarf fortress is basically the main point of playing it.
outside of if you're performing !!SCIENCE!! and want to test something out which by then any outcome would be a boon.
balance and fairness in dwarf fortress is giving you the option to do the same thing the other groups can do.
and so far no one really rides a mount in adventure mode. like that only pops up in fort mode where your baby dwarves will mount their mothers just as your invaders will mount their horses.

being able to do that in adventure mode would more likely asking toady for being able to talk to or communicate with animals or have the talk dialog for them working.
on top of that this opens up to all kinds of modding and balance gets toss out of the window.
also chances are the mount would just be a slightly faster gait than you normally walking so speeding up gonna tire the horse out or something.
speaking of mounts
also you could just mount a mechanical miniwagon and ride that around the place.
and then die from slamming into a wall trying to escape an ambush leaving your companions behind.
or die slamming said Mechanical Miniwagon into a marketplace and fling everyone everywhere.
or fill miniwagon with all kinds of sharp objects then launch that miniwagon into "Person I want to be dead now but I don't want to be blamed for it."
so uhh wait mounts are in the game then just not fort mode mounts.

If you can mount a minecart, why couldn't you mount an animal?

uhh minecarts don't tire out after 5 pushes, or instant kill you if you hit a wall at 4000 MPH.
where as mounts might be uhh normal animals thus you lose out on the fun of running a horse into a wall and having both the rider and horse explode into gore.
that said dfhacking companions on your back and piggyback riding them all over the place was fun, even when you do that on a minecart.
better question is why can't we drag folks around in adventure mode or do any of the fort mode unit handling stuff in adventure mode?

Yeah, it feels like if you're wrestling someone and you've grabbed them and move, it should try to drag them behind you instead of instantly releasing. Some kind of struggle-against-grip check so active opponents could wiggle away.

hmm that sounds kinda tiring for both parties. why not just have you shove said person into a sack I mean I'm not bringing this stuff up because you can do this in dfhack. nah. *shifty eyes*
