You kill everything with balistas. This includes champions, babies and a gobbo or two. Catapults are safe to use near nonenemies.

For certain values of 'safe', anyway...

As to keeping the siege operators from running, you just need to seperate them from any potential sources of interruption by a wide margin. Use a row of fortifications a long way away from the siege weapons and channel the enemies/traders into a long tunnel. Killing field!

True, but it beats a lot of catapult tossers: Fling! Tree. Fling! Deer. Fling! Shrub. OH GOD TOO CLOSE RUN AWAY!!! ...and that's if you've got a good siege operator. Otherwise it takes 'em months to put a new stone in.

Okay, he did kill the deer there...
