Uh.... Why do we need to learn 'Earth stuff'?  We've been here our entire life, right?

You try to sneak up on the unsuspecting rice, lo and behold you step on a creaky board.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It quietly wailed in protest. Mike lets out a sigh and continues doing the dishes.
"'Morning sis. I kinda expected more of a snatch and run from you. Nope. Not today. We are gonna sit down and eat breakfast as a family."
You take a seat and look around. The kitchen is adorned with a oven/stove, a 1950s model fridge and freezer, electric dishwasher, and, of course, a metal sink. The dishwasher doesn't get the job done right, so manually doing the dishes is essential. Mike finishes the dishes and drags out two glasses, while you pass out the food.
-----------------------------------------------------
Breakfast was eaten in silence, due in part to some clever wordplay.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
You hike up your bag and manage to escape before Mike went on his usual play of his personal expectations of you. You live on an island in the middle of a lake. It may sound bad, but in reality, the island is large enough to hold three towns and have room for more. To the left of your house is your best friend's house. He waits at the corner nearby, looking out for the bus. He is tall and rather nerdly. He dressed in the cliche nerd attire, minus the taped glasses. His hair was spiked as per the usual for him. He turns and yells, 'Ey, Lauren! Come on down here! I could use a little company while I wait. Might make this suck a little less."

(Forget that bit about me having to go to. My father forgot I have a phone.)

Amir is his name. He has been your best friend since you were little. He was always the nerdy person in your group of friends. He was also the most emotionally unstable. He prefers to catch a ride to school rather than walk. It takes a lot longer, but, he insists on it. Usually by this time, the others are already at school waiting for you. And of course,  who could forget that tomorrow you go to the human capital on the continent.
-------------
Wait for the bus with Amir?
Or
Head down there without him?

Surely we're not THAT maladjusted to be using adjectives like 'human' in that fashion?  Good grief, we've been living here our entire life.

Well of course wait for the bus with him.

(No. In all actuality you aren't from this world. I'll explain when the time cones)

(Essentially thirteen years, though for about six or seven of so, you had to hide.)

( I'll give a history report in a little while. It'll explain in better detail)

((Age: 16.  Time spent here: 13 years.  We're STILL theoretically mostly native.  Especially if they started us on English when we arrived/we watched TV.))

(Like I said, I'll explain it in the near future. More or less, it'it's mostly human history and science, as magic is almost nonexistent in this setting. And at some point there will be some action)

You stroll down to the stop. It's probably just a few minutes away anyhow.
"Heyya, Amir. How's it goin'?"

Not too bad. Lucy and Jon came down yesterday and had dinner with my family. Wierd, but welcome. And you know how Reggi is.

"Oh, yeah. He in juvy again? Or just his apartment at the station?" Reginald is his older delinquent brother. Last year he was arrested by the police six or seven times for various infractions of the law. Like larceny, vandalism, and petty theft. It's been about a month since his last incarceration. But, that's not important now.
Jon and Lucy are your other friends. They've been so for years and years. Recently They got together and going strong with their relationship. Also not really relevant right now.

You wait in silence for about 3 minutes, then the bus arrives. It'It's loaded down with kids. Most of them are from out of town. They usually live on farms or in small villages. Some are from the inner cities though those are few and far between.

You take the only free seat left. In the back on the right. And while Amir is your best friend, he sits with the other nerds, almost completely ignoring you. The ride to school took a little while. You arrive there with a few minutes to spare. Sitting outside talking to a new kid. The bell rings right as you walk up. No time to talk. You rush in and sit through the most boring day of school yet. Lectures and lectures for hours.

(Now the history) You used to live in another place. One day, a rift in the dimensional fabric left you, your family, and many others from various universes marooned on this wretched place. It created a new continent in between North America and Asia. The humans (currently locked in the Cold War) saw this as aggression from that front. The immediately invaded and killed many, many people. The humans set up ghettos and some formed groups like the KKK. You and the other intra dimensional immigrants had to hide your faces. Otherwise they would lynch you. You had to wait for a long time before a government stepped in to keep it from being torn apart by the other nations. It was years before the USA took the young nation under its governmental wing. In between those times, schools didn't exist. Any that were built were subsequently burnt down. The lynching still happens, but it's more rare now. Still a danger though. And looking human also reduces the chances of dying significantly.
The only magic in the world comes from glyphs brought from the other worlds. They are somehow implanted on the people when they entered this world. They give mysterious powers. That is all that is all that is currently relevant.

Also think about how to obtain civil rights and destroy the terrorist groups.
