When I take the new DF and put it in a directory called "Dwarf Fortress" under the MDF directory and try to start MDF, I get an error that DF can't be found and it must be in the same directory as MDF.  Am I doing something wrong?  Is 42.03 compatible with MDF?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: No with a lot of Os.

Currently it is impossible to update, because the utilities are missing and even after that I would guess to port the entire MDF 6.2 to 42.03 you are looking at a three-figure number of working hours.

I am however taking an interest in DF again, so there will be activity here in the future.

Do note that the thread for 6.2 explicitly states 34.11 as the version. It should probably be made clearer that the update date of 18 December was in 2014.
