Not relevant, it'd be a mushroom with any sufficiently large detonation.

Notably much brighter with a nuke, though.

[If we get two pieces of thick cheese cloth (or similar cloth) and some charcoal, maybe someplastic cups we could attempt to make a makeshift breathing filter,  we would have to activeate the charcoal and put it between the two cups
something like this
({C{(
(=cup with holes poked in it
{=cloth
C=Activated charcoal powder

strap cup around mouth and such or us the fabric of the second layer to make a sort of mask around the face and nose held secure via straps

you would need to be carefully as, if I remember correctly, activated charcoal can be a carcinogen if inhaled. But if this is done correctly, a risk of cancer in the future will be a lot better then radiation poisoning now.))

Well, with no better indications, we could go back and lose whatever progress towards the remains of civilization and look for a hazmat suit that would be better than anything we can currently make. Or we can just man up, make one and get going before we die of exposure or mishaps of the wilderness.

Additionally, and I know this sounds strange, including cat litter in the mix for our hazard mask would be beneficial. Most cat litter is made of minerals that bind with some major detonation products, making it useful for filtering radioactive particulate from things.

I'm currently assuming the detonation is nuclear or an unknown sci-fi equivalent, because the most distinguishing feature of nuclear detonation is the brilliant flash, something Cryxis specifically pointed out. There are other ways of producing the effect, like extremely high-velocity impact or matter-antimatter annihilation, but conventional explosives or thermobarics would not, nor would it be practical to create an amount of such things sufficient to equate a high-yield nuke.

Spoiler: Thermobaric stuffs (click to show/hide)

True, but in the event of getting rid of a population and still having some use for the land afterwards, a thermobaric makes more sense than a nuclear detonation of any size. Nuclear destroys the land and makes it uninhabitable for hundreda, if not thousands of years, whereas a thermobaric, would only leave the ground dried and the buildings rendered to ash and twisted steel. There are no other ecological effects besides the temporary removal of an ecosystem. That will eventually return. The land will be arable again in probably less than two or three years. Or if an active effort is made, one to one and a half years. Nuclear, once again has almost no strategic advantages besides just vaporizing any sort of defence or potential soldiers and rendering the land inhospitable to one's enemies.

Yes. I don't agree with the use of nuclear weapons except in a few, very specific situations, but again, I'm basing my assumptions off of the flash, not any strategic knowledge, of which we have almost none. The city could have been a zombie contamination site, for all we know.

((Just so no one calls me out on this, while main character has extensive knowledge on foreign weapons, he has very limited knowledge of WMDs because most nations have kept the type of weapon (nuclear, kinetic, thermoberic, chemical, viral, etc etc) secret so their enemies can not form a way to defend against them))

Alright, lets can the debate and play some. We should, regardless of the type of explosion, try our darndest to make an air filter and take off before a potential fallout rain hits us.

What do the clouds in the sky look like? More specifically, how many heads does each cloud have, if any. And how are they aranged?

I'm pretty sure a combination of previously posted actions should do us for the next few minutes.

Edit: Just to be clear, my knowledge on the subject of WMDs is solely that which could be obtained on the internet by anyone with an interest, plus some low-level college stuff about the specific physics of the thing.

Hurrying to get away from any blast or other immediate danger you get back in the car and drive it down the road, around to the other side of the hill.

You stop on the side of the road near the base of the hill and begin frantically looking for something ANYTHING to make a mask out of.

But the contents of the car stay the same, the best you can do is fold the jacket a few times and hold it to your face.

During all of this you have noticed the ground shaking every so often, small tremors rocking the car back and forth. Even the trees sway ever so slightly as the ground shakes.

What do you do now?
