If the wind is coming towards us, we need to drive perpendicular to the wind then drive in a semicircle around the city. We would need to get to the other side in the case of the wind direction being a regular feature of the area.

The visible-light flash from a nuclear detonation will cause severe damage to unprotected eyes a great distance further than the shockwave or direct radiation pulse are even a concern. We will want to be careful with fragile things like glass, and if the fallout cloud's being blown our way by the current weather conditions, we'll want to go perpendicular to it and improvise a breathing mask to prevent isotopic particles from entering our system, where they're far more dangerous than an exterior radiation source would be. Additionally, while the blast site itself will obviously be contaminated indefinitely, the worst of the isotopes generated by the reaction decay quickly, rendering it far less immediately hazardous over the weeks and months following detonation.

[We will obviously want to think about the questions of whether this actually is a nuke, and not something weird and sci-fi, and if our character would know any of this to act on.]

It might simply be a thermobaric explosive on a grand scale. ((Though nukes would (technically?) Be considered thermobaric, there is a slight difference. In that, one leaves a radioactive zone where nothing survives longer than a few minutes, the other just destroys everything and burns the entire area to dust. In the event of it being nuclear, we stay the fk away from it. If it's a normal boring thermobaric, I assume it would be okay for someone like ourself to head there as soon as next week and not worry about radiation poisoning rendering us into a slowly dying pile of cancer and malignant mutations.))
