I noticed a funny thing in the Legends of my world and immediately thought of this thread. Meet Tohwot Eaglecoast, born in 273, son of human lord Asthi Bronzeframe of Weightreleased. Here's a direct dump from Legends Viewer:

Quote
In 274, the goblin Smunstu Spidershot abducted Tohwot from Weightreleased. In an abduction.

In 274, Tohwot settled in Matchdoomed. In an abduction.

In 274, the goblin Olngo Poisonsewers abducted Tohwot from Matchdoomed. In an abduction.

In 274, Tohwot settled in Urgeghoul. In an abduction.

In 283, Tohwot settled in Weightreleased.

In 283, Tohwot was reunited with the human Uthra Copperrustic in Weightreleased.

In 284, the goblin Zolak Liewanders abducted Tohwot from Weightreleased. In an abduction.

In 284, Tohwot settled in Stolenverse. In an abduction.

In 284, the goblin Osta Sinfulprowls abducted Tohwot from Stolenverse. In an abduction.

In 284, Tohwot settled in Urgeghoul. In an abduction.

In 284, the human Sutar Campedthunders abducted Tohwot from Urgeghoul. In an abduction.

In 284, Tohwot settled in Sectghoul. In an abduction.

In 285, late spring, (Felsite, 21) Tohwot settled in Blownmirror. In The Conquest of Blownmirror as a result of The Scraped Sieges as part of The War of Bolting.

In 285, early summer, (Hematite, 5) Tohwot settled in Polishabyss.

In 285, late autumn, (Timber, 1) Tohwot married the human Pevit Villagerock.

So he was kidnapped into five different goblin civilizations during his childhood. He managed to escape once, only to be recaptured by a different bunch of goblins, and apparently only adulthood prevented further abductions. This also hints that snatchers abduct equally from all civilizations, goblin or not-goblin.

It might be a shortage of historical figure children, or can a child become historical by getting kidnapped from the generic population?
Wait, sentient creatures are divided into historical figures and generic population?
I always just assumed that "historical figures" referred to the entire world population, and the total world population was only historical figures - dead.
So, worlds that I thought had 10,000 sentient beings instead might have hundreds of thousands?

It certainly looks that way, even when the .40.xx version was supposed to do something about it. For instance, in my world there are 25 012 historical sentients out of total alive population of 274 329. These figures are from a Legends dump from couple years ago viewed in Legends Viewer; I have no idea how accurate they are.

You almost certainly have "Cull unimportant historical figures" on, it stops random peasants who literally never do anything interesting from clogging up legends mode.

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

Does it affect worldgen at all?

I'm not sure if this was for me but I always switch it off when I generate my worlds. I see this in every world I've genned; a vast pool of unnamed population and a smaller group of "historical" creatures. Maybe I should try one world with the cull option "on" and see what happens...

Ok, a quick world gen test with a small world and 100 years worth of history. Genned a world with the same seed twice, once with culling and once without. Results:

Total sentient population: 47944 in both worlds
Alive historical characters: 4998 culled, 8518 non-culled

This is of course very unscientific and the generation process will give slightly different numbers with each try but the magnitude is visible. Also visible is the fact that there is a large surplus sentient population outside the historical group.

I'm not aiming at anything with this; it was just interesting to note that it is still a thing.

Historical figures are people (or animals) that did *something* historical. The cull option simply does not record the name, etc of individuals that did not do anything interesting. For example if someone's only historical act was to be killed by a megabeast then with culling on he will not be listed as a historical figure, but with it off he will be listed, but the only events will be his death (and maybe birth). With culling on the megabest will be said to have killed someone, but it won't say who.
