They blew up the new Republic goverment and fleet. And per the movie's own words all the Resistance has are a few dozen old X-Wings, several of which got blown up in the attack against SK base, whereas by all accounts the First Order still has an operative fleet.

All in all it could be argued that the SK base was the best performing, in regards to cost-effectivity, of all the Death Star models.

...I think you're seriously underestimating the costs involved in hollowing out an sun-proofing a planet.  How did they even?!?!?
I think this is something interesting to study the physics on. :P

The only reason people cared about Alderaan in A New Hope was because it was emotionally important to characters they cared about, and because the impact of it within the film was presented on a human scale rather than "PEWWWW KERPOW VHWOOOOOM".
I'm part of the new people so I never got exposed to IV, V, VI before D:
At the time of release, was there any knowledge of prequels or something? A New Hope was entitled "IV" right? (And thus people wondered where were the first 3?)

IIRC A New Hope was originally numbed "I" but then the prequels changed the order.

It's episode IV. I can't quite remember why he did it, but it was intentional.

It was just "Star Wars". Then "Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back".

So not Star Wars: A New Hope, then out of nowhere there's 'Episode V'? ???

The first movie had no subtitle on original release. It was "Star Wars". Then out of nowhere there's "Episode V".

But the opening title crawl for "Star Wars" always said Episode IV, right?

That's what I'm wondering about :/ I've wondered if this was an edit in the more recent decades (since I ran across info that some scenes in the movie were edited to accommodate the technology of the time). So...

I'm wondering if people were surprised they were watching Episode V when there was no indication beforehand :P

Pretty sure that they put IV on the opening crawl to give the audience the impression of an "ongoing story" even though that was the first one.

Campy? ???
Re-answering with something more on point:
Quote from: UrbanDictionary
Camp (n.) and Campy (adj.): Being so extreme that it has an amusing and sometimes perversely sophisticated appeal. Over the top and farcical, intentionally exaggerated so as not to be taken seriously. Found primarily in television, theatre and motion pictures, camp endeavors for satire and, for those who fully understand and appreciate the risible nature of its material, it's not surprising when it develops a cult following.

I feel like that's a really lame definition of campy...  I've never seen it as having to do with being extreme.  Satire, possibly, but not always.

I associate it more with storytelling that breaks willing suspension of disbelief, usually by portraying the character's interactions with each other and the world in a way that doesn't feel natural -- usually with either excessive genre self-awareness and irony, or by setting a tone that is too serious or not serious enough for the subject matter.

Much better definition!

You act as if it was always known that it would be some sort of epic saga spanning 9 movies, a shitload of books and games and 3 tv shows.
