You awaken, unsure of when or why you slept. All you remember is a sweet scent.

You are sitting, somewhere. It looks and smells like a hospital, save for the bodies suspended by meathooks through bloodless wounds. They look almost human, yet their skin is flawless, knowing neither the gaze of the sun or the toils of labor. Not a blemish or scar in sight, like porcelain dolls. You are seated around a large circular table, among several other students, many of which who look like they are in the same position as you.

Sitting in front of each person is a doll, a doll of living flesh made in their image, sitting upon a few sheets of printed paper. Each holds a character sheet and a pencil, sightlessly staring expectantly at their counterpart with unblinking eyes. In the center of the table is a shifting mass of flesh and bone that twists and turns, forming models of various expansive terrains and interiors that shift and mutate with each passing second.

Sitting with neither paper nor doll before a laptop is Drei.

Summaries

Spoiler: The World (click to show/hide)

Retrofuturistic in that 1950's way. Colossal skyscrapers stand with enormous roadways bridging the gap, with synthetic vegetation on the large concrete divider between the two sides. Monowheels, sphere drives and mag-levs rush the lanes. This is an idyllic vision of the future from a time where cigarettes seemed both refreshing and healthy, that atomic powered cars seemed feasible, and wherein coating all your worldly possessions with Teflon so that cleaning may be done via garden hose seemed plausible.

Extradimensional beings normally incapable of interacting with this dimension. Should someone have the right brainwaves, which are created by negative emotions such as hate, cruelty, despair, apathy, et cetera, the Yami can use them as a host to physically manifest. For this reason each type is named after a negative emotion, such as Joyless. They are arranged in hierarchical "kingdoms" based on the "purity" of their emotion. For example, Despair is mostly sadness, so the Yami associated with it are capable of picking up and hurling their foes several miles.

They are powered by Essence, with which they have a fixed but inexhaustible supply of, which allows them to perform seemingly supernatural feats.

Young girls are unable to produce the right kinds of brainwaves that permit Yami parasitism. For this reason, they are recruited to combat them. Those who are dying be it from illness or injury, are offered a second chance at life, in exchange for their service. Partially transformed into Yami, they become Magical Girls and are shipped around the world to combat Yami outbreaks, XCOM style.

As their transformation is incomplete, they are still very much sane. However, they are incapable of producing Essence on their own, and so must harvest it from their foes. Essence is both the power source and lifeblood of Magical Girls who can store it without limit. They can use it to regenerate from harm and enhance their own physical capabilities. They can also use it to cast spells, but in order to "spill" the required Essence they must be be injured be it from combat or self-inflicted. Note that any spilled Essence that was not used within one turn is lost (so it can be used on the turn when it was spilled, the turn after, but is gone by the turn after that) regardless of what it came from. Should they run out of Essence, they die.

For this reason, they are often equipped with Essence Batteries which may be used to replenish Essence like a first-aid kit, or just spilled in order to power spells.

Each Magical Girl has two Natures, concepts that their magical power reflect.

Spoiler: Yami-Derived Resources (click to show/hide)

Yami are persistent. They regenerate. They return. And they will keep on doing so, no matter how much punishment they take, so long as they have their Heart. A Yami's heart contains its Essence and Natures. Tear it out, or destroy it outright, and the Yami will perish. Destroying it spills their Essence. But if you tear it out, and you can only do so with your bare, human hands, it becomes a Crystal Heart.

There are many uses for Crystal Hearts. They may be:

• Directly drained of Essence. Very important as Magical Girls cannot generate their own Essence, so this is basically the main way they "heal.
  
• Converted into Essence Items, which are functionally identical to Essence Batteries.
  
• Used to forge items Dark Souls style. The resulting item will have two Natures, one from the Yami, the other from the Forger. More Crystal Hearts can be consumed in the process to make it more powerful, but will not affect its Nature.
  
• Converted into a marionette-like Guardian Angel, an automaton that, upon activation, blocks a certain amount of damage (the quantity depending on the amount of Essence and the Heart used to create them) and retaliates with equal force. Each Magical Girl can only have one active at a time.
  
• Consumed to raise Stats or Qualities. The higher the Stat or Quality, the more hearts are needed to raise them by a certain amount.
  
• Broken down in order to extract one of its Natures. The Magical Girl then gains that Nature in existing to all their current ones. Only one Nature may be extracted at a time.
  
• Converted into Idols. When they receive Essence equal to the amount the Yami they once were had, be it supplied up over time or all at once, it regains its old form and all its powers. It will follow the commands of summoner and fight for them until desummoned or destroyed.
  
• Transformed into a Permanent Fusion. These are parts of the Yami that have melded with a Magical Girl. For 25% of the Yami's original Essence (again over time or all at once), they may be manifested. These bodyparts act with the full strength of the original Yami.
  

There also exist Combat Fusions, which are similar to Permanent Fusions but only cost 5% of the Yami's Essence and do not require a Crystal Heart. All this requires is the severed bodypart that the Magical Girl wants to fuse with. The trade-off being, the fusion only persists so long as the Yami it came from still lives. As missions revolve around eliminating all Yami in the area, these are always temporary.

Stats - These are for more mundane attributes.

• Speed: Initiative and reaction time.
  
• Dexterity: Aiming and balancing.
  
• Strength: Hitting, throwing, lifting.
  
• Stamina: Extended, rigorous actions.
  
• Resilience: Taking and shrugging off damage.
  
• Intelligence: Mental capacity stuff.
  
• Charm: Charisma and influencing others.
  
• Will: For tests of resolve.
  
• Awareness: Seeing what is incoming, and what is in their environment.
  

Qualities - For the more Magical Girl related attributes

• Courage: Aggressive magic. For harm or impairment of all types (even mental harm and binding).
  
• Purity: Neutral magic. What is not Aggressive or Defensive, such as illusions, polymorphing and detecting.
  
• Innocence: Defensive magic. To protect from or reverse harm. Or to empower.
  
• Imagination: Idol usage.
  
• Love: Both kinds of Fusion.
  
• Nature: Not numerical, just whatever concepts they use.
  

(Note that spells do not have fixed Qualities. Use a spell for offense and you roll courage. Use the exact same spell for defense and it becomes innocence instead.)

Rolls are 1dx. Where x is the value of the relevant Stat or Quality. For each point of Essence spent on a roll, you may raise either the minimum roll value or the maximum roll value, by one. If the roll is for a Quality (or summoning or fusing), you must use spilled essence, often meaning Self-Harm.

More severe injuries result in greater Essence loss. This Essence is considered spilled and may be used as such. Though obviously, spilled Essence cannot be reabsorbed. The more severe an injury, the more turns are needed to regenerate from it.

For competitive rolls, the highest roll wins. For other rolls, it's against a target. In all cases, the higher the difference, the greater the success or failure.

At on character-creation, players have 45 Stat points and 5 Quality points. Characters start with 500 Essence.

Charts

Spoiler: Stat Target Number Chart (click to show/hide)

1-3	Mundane, easily done with relatively little effort.
4-6	Average, something that requires an expenditure of effort, skill or force.
7-9	Difficult, the sort of thing that would probably require either a good amount of skill, training or both to accomplish. Limits of what an average human could do.
10-13	Extreme: The limit of normal human ability. Things at this level would require world class level skills to pull off for a normal human. Olympians, geniuses and prodigies.
14-20	Limited heroic: Leaping 25 feet, running 40 miles an hour, tearing the door off a car, etc. Actions that surpass human capacities but not insofar as to be completely outrageous.
21-30	Heroic: Running 40-70 miles an hour, lifting and throwing cars, uprooting lamp posts, slicing bullets with a sword or dodging through them.
31-50	Superheroic: Running 100 miles an hour, tossing cars around easily, catching bullets, throwing things at ballistic speed and force, punching fifty times in one second, tanking a school bus to the face.
51-70	Ultraheroic: Moving at sub sonic speeds, Easily tossing around things that weigh 10 tons, leaping to the top of tall buildings in a single bound, punching straight through thick concrete pillars, stopping trains, etc.
71-90	Legendary: Moving at supersonic speeds, lifting and throwing things that weigh 20 to 50 tons, running straight through solid reinforced concrete walls without slowing down, dodging through the shrapnel from a bomb, tanking a building falling on you.
91-120	Mythic: Moving so fast as to appear to teleport, lifting and throwing 60 to 150 tons, causing giant shockwaves with each punch, cutting things at a distance with the force of a sword swing, etc.
120+	Transcendent: Anything that goes above mythic goes here. Just gonna have to estimate it.

Spoiler: Quality Target Number Chart (click to show/hide)

1-3	Very low level magic; create a flame about as large and powerful as a lighter or cheap butane torch. Levitate a very light object, transfer a single thought to another person, repair something very simple, summoning something very simple like a match or toothpick etc. More than likely useless in combat, but might have useful auxiliary use (like lighting the fuse on a stick of TNT, or flipping a switch from a distance).
4-6	Weak stuff. Minor illusions, simple non-living summons like smoke or a brick, a fist sized fireball, a charm to let you remotely listen to things from a distance,  electricity equal to thatfrom stungun, etc.
7-9	Basic spells, fireballs the size of a softball, a short-ranged zap of electricity, charms to let you watch and listen at a distance, explosion roughly equal to an M80, repairing more complex or larger things, creating moving illusions, weak bindings, summoning a knife etc.
10-13	Enhanced basics. Fireball the size of a basketball, a bolt of electricity the like of which you could get from a tesla coil, charms to allow effective telepresence, repairing things like complex mechanisms, producing a forcefield strong enough to stop a handgun bullet, summoning a sword, etc.
14-20	Fireball two feet in diameter, a burst of chain lighting from the finger tips, lift and throw a couch with telekinesis, forcefield strong enough to stop a barrage of bullets, summoning a quiver of arrows or several magazines for a gun, repairing something very complex like a pocketwatch or electronic device, etc.
21-30	Summon multiple blades, telekinetically move large objects, bind with moderately powerful spells, create lifelike illusions, summon both inanimate and animate things, bring down multiple lightning bolts, throw fireballs that are nearly as big as you are, etc.
31-50	Forcefields powerful enough to stop rockets or bombs, telekinesis strong enough to throw cars around, teleportation, cloned doubles, a barrage of chain lighting or pillar of fire, etc.
51-70	Annihilate matter, create larger more encompassing illusions, summon up living body guards, fire a barrage of missiles, pick up an enemy and hurl them a mile or more, etc.
71-90	<Nothing was written here in the rulebook.>
91-120	Summon and fire hundreds of blades, use telekinesis to lift buildings and hurl them around, create explosions that could level a city block, condense a thunderstorm into a single bolt, burn everything in sight to ash, create a mob of summoned minions, temporarily stop time etc.
120+	When all hell breaks loose. If someone tries to pull off Unlimited Blade Works, this is what you'll use.

Spoiler: Essence Spilled from Injuries and Time Taken to Regenerate (click to show/hide)

1-3	Tiny injury: Very small injuries. Paper cuts or anything that draws a drop of blood. So minor as to be barely noticeable.	Instantly regenerates.
4-6	Insignificant injury: Minor injuries, scraping your knee, small cuts or light burns, bruises and the like.	Instantly regenerates.
7-9	Minor injury: Injuries that would be considered moderate in ordinary circumstances. Larger cuts, sprains, worse bruises and scrapes. Might need stitches or similar aid, but nothing major.	Instantly regenerates.
10-13	Moderate injury: Break a finger, rib, or nose, cut down to the bone, second degree burn over a relatively small portion of skin, tear muscle, etc.	1 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2, healed by the beginning of Turn 3).
14-20	Standard injury: Break a forearm arm or lower leg, stab straight through a hand, get a concussion, sever a finger or toe, lose chunk of flesh, third degree burns on a smallish section of the body, etc.	1 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2, healed by the beginning of Turn 3).
21-30	Greater injury: Loss of several fingers or toes, deep stabs to the arms and legs, breaking of upper limb bones, serious concussions, deep cuts to the chest and torso, crushing of limbs, being shot in the limbs, etc.	1 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2, healed by the beginning of Turn 3).
31-50	Terrible injury: Loss of a hand or foot, stabs to the gut, shoulders, and face, second degree burns over most of the body, being shot in the stomach, etc.	2 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2-3, healed by the beginning of Turn 4).
51-70	Crippling injury: Loss of a forearm or lower leg, damage to internal organs, really big deep cuts, breaking major bones, stabbed straight through the torso, etc.	2 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2-3, healed by the beginning of Turn 4).
71-90	Massive injury: The complete loss of a limb, a huge cut into the body, disemboweling, the shattering of many major bones, major internal organ damage, third degree burns over large parts of the body, etc.	2 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2-3, healed by the beginning of Turn 4).
91-120	Mortal injury: A massive injury that would, to an ordinary person, be either instantly or near instantly fatal. A stab straight to the heart or brain, decapitation, crushing of the head or chest, being cut or blown in half, etc.	3 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2-4, healed by the beginning of Turn 5).
121-140	Extra-mortal injury: More damaging than a mortal injury, generally a mortal injury combined with other higher level injuries. Such as having a head and arm ripped off at the same time.	3 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2-4, healed by the beginning of Turn 5).
141-160	Super-mortal injury: Same as above, but more. Generally might involve two or more mortal injuries, such as being beheaded and sliced in half at the same time. Or one single, really fatal thing. Like being split in half vertically.	3 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2-4, healed by the beginning of Turn 5).
161-180	Ultra-mortal injury: Anything worse then the above, but that doesn't totally destroy the body to the point of the below.	3 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2-4, healed by the beginning of Turn 5).
161-180	Annihilation: Total body destruction; sliced to pieces, torn apart, total fourth degree burns, blown up,  melted, shattered, etc.	4 turn regeneration (i.e. injury on Turn 1, regeneration during Turn 2-5, healed by the beginning of Turn 6).
