I don't really like the idea of a system with a chance to just fail catastrophically and explode into an OOC argument.

Which leads back to the above point wherein everyone will likely have a different mental image of the fight, meaning some actions look like they should work to one person, but won't work from the perspective of another.
To be fair, that's mostly my fault of being a bit shit at freeform combat back then.

I always like random chance to decide these sorts of things anyway so there's no ambiguity -- I felt a little cheated after the spar between Ray and Lidia, for example, because I felt that the surprises I had planned up Lidia's sleeve hadn't actually done anything, and also because Ray's the character type Lidia was designed against.

I don't necessarily mean making a weird complex system like most of the RPs have been doing recently since those seem to not be working out too well, but just simple dice rolls perhaps.

A game with no GM just doesn't work.

Well, it requires at least four people to resolve a 1 v. 1 duel. And combat isn't even possible under this system if there are less than four people present. Yeah.

Okay, you know how among the entries in usual list of "Anime Bullshit" there's the teammates who rather than actually fighting, just sort of stand there commentating on a match, even if they're perfectly capable of fighting? Well imagine if the majority of combat was actually decided by their commentary not the actual combatants.

Sure the combatants could influence events a bit by choosing what they do, and making their own statements, and affecting the battlefield, but they're closer to the pseudo-RNG of this system. Where the meat really is would be just how the commentators describe everything. No dice required, just some skill at being a sports commentator. Vague actions by the combatants are fine, even encouraged. So if someone just screams out "The Future Humany Reason Breaker" and throws a punch, it's their commentator's job to really sell it's power and details and the other commentator's job to give it arbitrary weaknesses to be exploited when it gets countered by "Mini Child Dissolution purge Clash".

Still doesn't work too well. I mean, look at the Clover vs. Kendall match, it basically just ended up with Kendall acting completely out of character because I couldn't actually form a mental image of the positioning and movements coherently enough for him to do it in-character, leading to a reactionary style that is completely against the tenants of the German School of Fencing.

It sounds funny, but I can't really say anymore without seeing it in action.
In that case, I'm going to need four volunteers for this demonstration.
