Actually, you literally can only get the neutral run first.

I'm pretty sure the best way to play is to have no idea that there is such thing as pacifist or neutral at all and just do whatever comes naturally. Then have your mind blown. I have no idea if that can still happen though, this late into the game's lifespan.

That's what I did a while back, and it was awesome.  The best way appears to be neutral -> pacifist -> true pacifist -> (only if you feel like it) genocide.

I wish I'd done that. Instead, I knew there was a pacifist route and that it was happy, and inferred I should kill no one.

First run through, only killed one vegetoid(by accident, at that), which meant I missed all the guilt-trip stuff or the like you could get by playing a normal neutral run. Also didn't stick with it enough to get the full experience sometimes, like as soon as Asgore said I couldn't get my happy ending on my second run I went "WHAT FUCK YOU NO"...which meant I missed Flowey telling you how, which would've been a lot faster than my half looking internet seeking for what I'd missed

I accidentally killed Toriel on my first run and since I didn't want to savescum, I decided to accept the consequences of my actions and continue with the game. I'm not above them after all. I ended feeling quilty about it several times and the neutral ending I got blew my mind.

Surprisingly, in the neutral endings it's not so unambiguously "Save Everyone!". I sincerely regretted all the effort I put into sparing Undyne.
