Upgrading a 40.24 game to 42.03
« on: December 20, 2015, 06:25:09 pm »

Has anyone tried this?

I'm far enough into my current 40.24 game that it will be painful to start over (I play slowly). But I'm intrigued by taverns/temples/libraries/visitors (plus sieges!).

If I try to bring my save folder over to a 42.03 install (or whatever version is the latest by the time updated dfhack, modestmod and hopefully obsidian come out), what will happen? Will I get weird crashes? Will I fail to get tavern keepers or musicians because they're new in the raws? Will I get any goblins?

Eventually, I'll be able to do my own science, but I'm trying to plan ahead: if the outlook isn't good, it'll likely sap my enthusiasm for continuing.

If you upgrade a save from 0.40.xx to 0.42.xx, it will mostly continue to work as it did before - certain new features (such as procedurally-generated musical instruments) will likely not be available, but what you currently have should continue to work.

After all, if savegames weren't expected to be compatible, Toady One would have made the game prevent you from loading them in the first place (just like he did with the initial releases of 0.31, 0.34, and 0.40).

[edit] One thing that might cause problems is the fact that Strange Moods are now linked to the new raw token [STRANGE_MOODS], so they will stop happening unless you edit your save's raws to add it in. In fact, "file changes.txt" explicitly mentions this (though perhaps not prominently enough).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

If you're interested in taverns, temples and libraries there's not much point in carrying on a 40.24 game. Taverns without music, no performers, libraries without books, no scholars...

Sieges, sure, seems to be plenty of them. Trees no longer destroy the world either, which is pretty good. But for taverns, libraries and temples you're better off making a new 42.x world.

Thanks for this.

I'd be willing to do it for the sieges alone. (I really don't want to start over.)

But, if my world is bereft of musicians etc, will my dwarves end up with needs that can't be met? Will they still be able to introspect and make merry and "hear eloquent speech"?

!Science! and let us know.

I expect they'll be able to socialize and tell each other stories which will probably cover most needs (if they actually have them). But musical and poetic forms won't exist so they'll never spontaneously grab their partners by the beard and swoosh them onto the dance floor in the way the best 42.x dwarves do.
