Guess I don't want to collapse the wavefunction so much as I want to know what kind of actions I can take to interact with it. Can I try to scan passively without imposing my will on the world? Can I speak through it? Is it something I cast and know what it'll do, or something that I allow to act through me?
These are somewhat silly questions to be asking, because I'm the one who invented it, not you. But I'll ask them anyway. :P

Also, Caroline is the human; Evelyn is the alien.
I'll try and remember which is which.

You can possibly scan passively. What yo udiscover through that is to be determined.
Speaking through it could happen. Speaking meaningfully would require some luck.
Know what it'll do? Evelyn might understand what the ability is supposed to do, but the effect in this world might be beyond her way of thinking.
You could definitely attempt to allow it to act through you.

Hmm. as a bit of a passive, you can use the ability to get a sort of sense of things beyond your normal understanding -flow of magic, mystical rituals, other esoteric information, that sort of thing. but otherwise, you are basically "using forces beyond your understanding to attempt to interact with this world in a way those forces weren't exactly designed for, on account of those forces being designed for another reality." Make sense?

"I suspect that in both cases things fell apart near the start, and that one of those mistakes was my own choice to attempt to go scouting for a better place to put the carts in person when I had not yet seen how capable the two designated teams and team leads were. I do not know firsthand if my being there could have helped, but not being onhand certainly did not. After all, by the time I came back, the carts were destroyed, and the chain reaction of events had begun. By the same token though, since I wasn't there, I don't know what other errors were made."
"Coordination and guidance are key in leadership roles. Your background as a solitary wanderer and shapetaker gears you toward independent action. A conflict of styles, it seems. Is this a fair assessment of why you chose to leave your teams to their own devices, or is there , possibly, more to it?"

peek my head up out of the cart and see if everyone has left yet.

If so, grab a box of rations and sneak off somewhere.
Maybe use my soften earth tattoo to dig a nice little cave for myself to rest in between missions.

((Hey ozarck, did we ever establish the requirements for being able to use multiple tattoos simultaneously?

I recall a vague "after a few level up's" but nothing specific.))
The cat is there, and some kind of small flying fairy thing. The fairy thing requests your assistance with Dar's moss and metal.
((I don't recall what we established about multitasking. I think it was either: add a spec, or gain a level in the skill involved.))

((@Ozarck
There's still a very relevant question, of what would happen if Egan's example had +2 instead of -2 magic skill.  Let's say their spec is in a pretty versatile school, like Ebony's wizardry.  In what way is that char balanced with their peers?  They can cast, with apparently nigh-perfect reliability and great power, a vast array of spells that can occupy a great range of roles.))

"This one requires assistance first.  Could Baldmonkey send one to bring Moss to base of Base, and bring metal to Magesmith?  Cat will give report then."

Dar says the above to the creature.  He's stubbornly staying with the cart and his items until his request is met, but will begrudgingly follow afterward.
((two +2s require -7 in other skills, for a starting character, so they would be a specialist indeed. I have stated before that Spellcasting is one of the most powerful magics - though not as flexible as sorcery, for example. Limiting factors would include: having the spells on hand, being free of motion and able to speak to cast, and a few other things like that. But yes, in the instance you describe, they would be quite powerful with what spells they have available.))

The being tilts its head at you for a moment. "You there! it calls out to Cho Ja Please take this moss to the canyon floor, and then take the other stuff to the Foundry. She turns back to you. That's solved, then. Now, about what you experienced on the dying metal world?

((@double spec - I would not allow it, but would allow specializations of specializations. eg: wizard has spec magic, can then pick up spec of quickcasting to let him cast spells faster, or spec distant casting to extend their effective range, or so on.))
a reasonable alternative.

Abscond with the box of rations, lichen, and metals.

Once the two things are delivered, get to carving that cave.

((Hmm sounds about right, I'll probably specialize in it but let's also choose a stat/skill for it as well.

Clearly running multiple missions at the same time is a terrible idea.  The epic battle to see which team can cock it up worse has escalated again.

And Larry kinda gets blueballed in all this; just left with a raging bone spear and no where to put it.

I quite like lenglon's idea. How about something like "focusless casting" or "Internalized focus". Basically remove the requirement of having a focus (mannequin, metronome etc) to get the full effect of my spells?

Armour plating might be a good idea. It's a bit boring, but I do tend to take a lot of damage. Maybe something fancy like depleted orichalcum/[insert metal used for enchanting here] armour, which could dampen/absorb part of enemy spells cast against clunkers?

What did the being offer? What did you and your fellow beings request? What was actually delivered?

"I believe that is a fair assessment."
"A cautious answer. I understand you had some interaction with an apparently powerful being? Please describe the exchange you personally had with this being. As much information as you can, here. the more we know, the better we can address the issue."

will is probably the stat most useful. Constitution for preventing/surviving possible side effects. Magic for the skill, really.

You soften a bit of the canyon wall and it yields surprisingly quickly. You are suddenly buried by a flow of dirt, gravel, and stones. Yo uare being suffocated and crushed.
You survived the mission of doom. Don't die to yardwork, manbug!

Focusless casting is sort of contrary to the concept of clockwork magic. You could try maybe turning your body into a focus, but that would mean that damage taken would reduce the effectiveness of your magic - makes sense really. As for dampening magical attacks - you'll have to collect various pieces to dampen different schools of magic. Give me the specific type of magic you are looking to dampen with a particular piece. You can have multiple. for instance, you could have a pearl bracelet, on which each pearl dampens one type of magic (with a small efect) or various gems inlaid into some jewelry or something.

I describe the portal, the area it led to, the being, our words, his reveal at the end, etc. in as much detail as I can.
"and he talked about doing buisness with us when we hadn't agreed to any form of exchange! he just asked for information then took that as some kind of agreement to request his aid at whatever price he wished! Thats not how agreements or buisness works!  We didnt even ask for anything, just gave him information! And I don't even know why I told him what I did!"
Yeah, Aylia is very angry about this.

If I get a spec that allow me to use my body as a sort of universal focus, will I still be able to use something else as a focus once I've taken too much damage?

Also, if I get armour plating that's just regular physical plating, no magical effects or anything, would that still be a spec or more like a piece of equipment? Because if it isn't a spec, I might go for that and the Clockwork Dust/Black Powder thing you mentioned several post ago.

The feline regards his interviewer darkly for a little while, before eventually launching into an irritated spiel.  "Dar'yajira very much doubts it is useful to learn of mission.  This one spent most of its time away from group, scouting wreckage of dead world.  When it returned from each trip, more destruction was always found.  First, floor and walls collapsed, Cat collected Shifter and Halfdragon, before finding portal to... realm of cruel lying god.  Then corpses got up, including Twoleg, which attacked Shifter.  Later more died while Dar'yajira slept, it believes due to Twoleg's actions, and group devolved into fighting before being split by another collapse.  Dar'yajira spent the rest of its time protecting Halfdragon, while Shifter went to collect and rescue the few left alive.  Those who were problems solved themselves quickly.

Is that sufficient for it?"

If that is indeed sufficient, Dar will head on down to the Foundry, and look for whoever got his metal.

"Create? Did he say create? as in, somehow make living beings, like constructs?"

Yeah, Aylia is very angry about this.
"business? hmm. You are part fey, I believe? hmm, I can see why you would expect certain rules to be followed. But it seems as if this entity is not of Fey. More likely Infernal. Or something else. Not everyone follows the rules. Why, the plains of Chaos are so described because they often do not follow the rules we understand. ah, how unfortunate.((remind me what Aylia remembers about the exchange - she knows what she asked for and what he replied to that?))

well then.

buff strength and dig the hell out of here.

(1) your buff strength fizzles under the stress and surprise of the situation. (4) you dig and shift and get a claw free into the open air. (6) And your claw is grabbed forcefully, and you are yanked out of the debris. You feel a shapr pain and hear a loud snap - your leg is broken in the process of dragging you free, and is spurting ichor. You gasp for air and in pain as you are lowered to the ground by large, knobbly hands. A dark, thick brow furrows above your face. a large nose comes into view, full of long hairs and less pleasant things.

If I get a spec that allow me to use my body as a sort of universal focus, will I still be able to use something else as a focus once I've taken too much damage?

If the focus is available and accessable, yes, you could still use it. But if it was on your person when you took the damage, it may have taken the same damage.
If you want armor as equipment, we can do that. What's your strength? most armors would need custom fit for your frame and would likely be rather heavy.

If that is indeed sufficient, Dar will head on down to the Foundry, and look for whoever got his metal.
"Ah, but you haven't told me the important parts? you took on the nature of lathal, did you not? I want to know more about Lathal? What is it'snature? What is the nature of it's heart? Can you find the heart again?"

If you want to continue this conversation and do the other simultaneously, that's fine. Go to the foundry and find that your metal was placed in a pile of scrap. the courier was less than descriptive of it's origin, ownership, or purpose.
