PYLON notices a scurrying rat and vaporizes it.
k

Let's try doing that trick I pulled with the Goblins again. Try to cross-reference what he's saying with languages in my databanks from my time in the magister's "service", and piece together a way to converse with the being.

If succesful, ask him to speak to their leader/elder.

If unsuccesful, try some other form of communication. Pictograms, maybe. Interpretive dance?

(4)you consult some linguistics texts and stand there for a while learning the language from this person. It doens't give you immediate mastery or anything, but as you've been fond of pointing out: constructs can wait with the best of them. anyway, you develop a rudimentary grasp of basic sentence structure, and the differences between verbs and nouns. You can now ask "how much for three (big purple fruitlike things), and "where's the toilet?"

(2) some nearby beings migrate over and start shouting and babbling in your direction, but it neither helps, nor harms, your learning experience.

shall I roll for interpretive dance now?

Interpretive dance while surrounded by squishy organics seems like a bad idea. Let's just continue with absorbing their language a bit more.

Once I feel confident that I have a solid grasp, attempt to ask the following:

"Query: Where is your leader? This one is a messenger send to speak to it."

you feel confident that you ask the question correctly - your phrasing and use of modifiers seems to be within acceptable standards with this language - but the being simply looks at you in confusion for a moment and echos "leader?"

"Reply: This one is looking for a being of great psychic power. It supposedly adheres to one or more of the following principles;

Loyalty
Judgment upon Injustice
Maintaining the Social Contract
Cosmic Balance
Survival

This one has no further information, but this one knows its power is considerate, since this one's master were able to pick up on it from very, very far away."

"Ah. Though we do not have the information you desire, perhaps we can help you after all. We'll take you to the Pool of Wisdom. The Pool will be your guide."

The being gestures for you to follow.

Follow the creature, this pool of wisdom sounds interesting to say the least. Don't just blindly accept anything they offer though, vigilance is key.

They lead you to a tunnel. a fierce wind blows across the entrance. they start to perform some kind of ritual at the entrance: the blobby guys kinda wiggle and moan. the stick guys clack their limbs together repeatedly. The small, conical things kinda bob up and down in place. They occasionally fall over. You can't tell if that is part of the ritual or not. It takes two other cones to upright one though.

Observe, record (and maybe try to cross reference the ritual with data from my databanks). Patiently wait, but also check for background magic that might be trying to harm me.

Also, slightly off topic, on a scale from newborn kitten to mangy old dog, how cute are these blobs and other gentlebeings?

cute by whose standards? yours, mine, or Clunkers'? For me, they'd be neither cute nor hideous. The blobs might be a bit disturbing to Clunkers, being all meatbag with no meat, while the triangular things might appeal to his inorganic aesthetic and sense of order. The stick guys ... probably the most attractive to clunkers, being all smooth and shiny, where the conical fellows are more dull, colorful, and with a well-worn look to them.

(5) you sense nothing inimical about what is going on, but you do get teh sense that you are expected to participate. Each group does a different repetitive act that is natural to their biology, and as far as you've determined, to their psychology as well. So, to properly participate, you'd probably want to do something that Clunkers would find normal, repetitive, and natural to himself. Sounds, motions, even magic are possible actions.

Clunkers sighs, this is not somethin he particularely likes to be reminded of, but it is the thing he was quite literally made for.

Having been an archive slave, he'll go through the motions of cataloguing books. Opening the cover, checking the data, writing in the place marker, stamping the book and putting it on the shelf. Rinse, repeat.

An unexpected action. In character, yet displaying character growth. Kudos.

After a time, Clunkers falls into the rhythm of the ritual. Soon, he loses himself to it. some time later, going about his routine, he pauuses before placing the book in the rack. Something about the data recorded caught his attention. He looks around the dusty library room. all is quiet. The wizard is gone, and Clunkers has ample time to complete his assigned task. A brief respite for curiosity's sake will do no harm. Clunkers looks at the title ofthe book: The City of Banners. The name is unfamiliar, yet somehow he feels as if this ought to have some meaning to him. He opens the book and leafs through a few pages. The writing is foreign, complex, and varied. after a few pages, Clunkers begins to recognize different hands at work, and even different languages and scripts. A simple drawing of a bloblike creature feels familiar. A furry, bat-eared creature with a muppet-like mouth, no eyes, and loooong whiskers and tufts of hair on the ends of his already large ears peeks out of the shelf just above Clunkers head.

"The servant of knowledge seeks to know? What ca nbe interesting in such a book for one such as you?"

Clunkers acknowledges the creature by looking up from his book, straight at it for a second, then returning his gaze to the book.

"Reply: This one seeks the being of great psychic power that shares many of the ideals of this one's masters. This one needs to deliver the message to this being, after all. This book caught this one's eye, for some reason."

Leaf through the book some more for relevant info, Converse with the creature meanwhile.

"Mhm. Libraries are full of books. Books are full of knowledge. Knowledge is power. Power is energy. Energy is mass. This is a very weighty matter indeed."

the furry sage laughs at this. his little belly rolls as he does, and he places his thin paws on his hip joints. A nictitating membrane flips up over each eye several times.

(2) the book yields no more secrets to your casual flipping. Perhaps the odd little fellow has disturbed your concentration.
