Adventurer Needs: How do I fulfill them?
« on: December 16, 2015, 12:37:56 pm »

My adventurer is apparently a creative, abstract thinker who likes to make things, spend time with family, and spend time with family. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to give him these things, as he has to friends, no family, and nothing to make or think abstractly about.

Anyone have any tips on how to fulfill these needs? I considered making poetry/song/dance, but my dwarf doesn't know any forms so he cannot compose.

Yeah, the trick there is to make sure that things like friends/family are kept in the middle or negative, same with romance.

You can put almost all of them at the middle except the stuff like harmony/vanity/intemperance which you minimize or maximize accordingly, and you can wind up with no needs at all. Did it for testing how effective nothing but faithful religious needs are at keeping you FOcused! and it turns out they're very effective.

Well I like my adventurer to have needs, I just don't know how to solve them. Does retiring return an adventurer's needs to 'undistracted?'

Not sure, but for ones like family/friends there is just no way to fulfill them right now.

I don't think you can get away from propensities, which aren't shown. I don't remember what mine were, but when I started the only extreme value I had was independence, yet I had a list of needs. Even with negative sacrifice values, "Help somebody" won't go away, nor will "Eat good meal".

You can't maximize focus without meeting all needs, but you can improve the net effect of them by shifting values to give yourself needs to do what you intend to do anyway. Like skill improvement and martial improvement, fighting and staying occupied are easy ones for any adventurer to meet. Drinking alcohol and socializing are pretty easy. Arguing is easier if you don't have such high persuasion that everyone is a pushover. Being creative is as easy as knapping rocks. I'm still not sure what meets "Think abstractly", so it's difficult to keep up.

You can indeed get away from propensities. Just scroll down enough, all the personality values are modifiable.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
Unless you're past reproductive age. Then you're pretty much an extension of your kids' genitalia

Does hitting two rocks together fill the need to create something? How about writing a book or creating a music piece.

Creating sharp rocks does fulfill the need to create.

I've seen all those "values", also called "beliefs" in fortress mode. What you don't see are those propensities that also exist, and can conflict with beliefs. You can manage those, but you can't modify them.

Yes, but banging rocks is faster, and increases more practical skills. Writing/composing may be more satisfying, but when you're out in the wild far from taverns and keeps, you'll find more rocks than codexes.

what? No your entire personality is modifieable, everything.

They are underneeth the "beliefs"

like "vengeful"
"quarreler", "ambitious" "Intemperate" "likes brawls", "lying", "romance", etc etc. All of them are underneeth the beliefs.

Beliefs
THESE ARE THE BELIEFS, every single one of them, check wiki if you don't believe me.

Propensities (all of them, there are NO more then this) these are NOT beliefs.

You can also set your life goal with g.

If you still do not believe me that you CAN change all propensities, heres the wiki article, cross examine and you will notice none of them are missing from this menu, none of the values or propensities are missing.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Personality_trait

The propensities are what make sit so you can roleplay your char properly which is why you can change all of them, and none of them are missing.
