In another world, in another time, things would've been very different.
Alain was raised by an estimable bookkeeper of a dignified library in one of the many places within the kingdoms of man. She was one of many children raised under the watchful eye of a venerable guardian: One who was strong in moral physique, and made it upon himself to be the change he wanted to see in the world--and made sure that this would be the foremost teaching he would impart to those he took care of and raised within the confines of the city archives.
The city Alain lived in was one of the smaller-scale habitations within the many kingdoms, though one that had a thriving industry overground...and underground. The populace of the kingdom was commanded by free-thinkers and volunteer enforcers, all working under a code of benevolent rulership, one which should've encompassed the city Alain lived in, but alas--a border city nearest the 'spread of the Curse' had a great psychological effect on the populace, especially considering the foundations of the area. The city was self-sufficient, but its open-city policy and isolation from most of the kingdom had consequences: Refugees or travelers included those under the curse, and without knowledge of origin or process of its workings, the city's protectors could not discern one from the other in accepting immigrants. This soon became the foremost origin of crime in the city, instead.
In the time that passed until her adulthood, Alain noticed the many differences with each passing year: Her mentor began full research into the study of the curse and left most of the children under the watch of the oldest among them; The city was divided into sectors, each beginning to focus on a specialty to meet the needs of its populace; Guardsman squads were created and mobilized to patrol each sector, meeting physical assault crimes with a trial-on-spot routine before disarmament and execution; Curfews were created in order to enforce discipline and personal protection; Cemeteries were abolished, the rites of the deceased were a purge by fire until only ashes were left behind.
This was all a temporary measure to counter the danger everyone could see, yet only few challenged in full: The Curse. At her coming of age, Alain was attacked (along with several other children under her watch) by a hallowed guardsman--one who slipped under the watch of his fellows until the worst occurred. After subduing the man (being thankful for keeping her knife for self-defense) and leaving the scene for the guardsmen to take care of, she blacked out--and found herself waking up in the innermost sanctuary of the library, surrounded by those she saved, and her mentor himself. She noted a deep melancholy in the air, which only solidified in her feelings as she questioned and was questioned about what had happened in turn. After a long night of dialogue and conversation, Alain was brought to the city gates under the cover of deepest night and knowledgeable secrecy by those she loved and trusted, and instead of facing the usual fate met by those who had died-and-did-not-rest, she was bid a quick but deeply sentimental farewell by those she spent her whole life with.
At the break of dawn before the morning gates were opened, Alain had left the safety and welcoming warmth of the city, armed with only her trusted knife and the clothes on her back (and in her satchel bag), as well as with the most potent weapon she could bring: Knowledge. She considered all she learned from those she trusted, and decided to further her mentor's research firsthand; to go where the living did not tread.
