Thoughts about picking up basic engineer's kits for engineer-ish characters?

Necessary it seems. We can't do much engineering without it.

Okay, we can only afford 3 basic ones at most...  I guess we should just pick up 1 and cycle it between us, otherwise we won't hit our wage target...

I think one will be enough.

Question: how is experience for rolls awarded?

On successful rolls I then roll the value of the roll for experience.
On failed rolls, I do not.

If the roll is the end of an event, I give experience for it either way.

For example;
Code: [Select]
1d20 + 3 = 19

1d19 = 6
+6 Experience.

I've been experimenting thus far to balance it fairly, and I think I've come to the above as rather balanced.

Ah I understand. So a perception roll wouldn't count then because we aren't doing a skill related task?

EDIT: And on a completely unrelated note, are engineering kits one time use or are they like a set of power tools that we can use multiple times?

Multiple use till you break or lose them. If you're on the ship and using them on the ship you don't need to find them, grab them, etc. to use them. However if you're leaving the ship to use it elsewhere, you'll need to grab it.

Critical Failure Base Rolls (ie, 1d20+6 = 7 is a critical failure base roll), has a possibility to break tools.

I don't suppose I'll be able to find medical gear similar to the kits, right?

I figure at some point, you're just gonna run outta fucks to give and just off yourself whenever you get hurt at all. It's not like there's any downsides to it. Hangover? Suicide will fix that. Stubbed your toe? Suicide. Headache? Suicide. Papercut? Suicide.

The problem with medical supplies is that they really arent reusable. You cant reuse pills or bandages or shots. The engineering kits are things like a hammer, screwdriver, and a blowtorch, which aren't consumable. Maybe advanced medicinal tech like nano bots could be reusable, but I cant think of much reusable basic medical supplies.

Sure, but a general medical kit will generally cover a few different injuries. If the guy gets an arm blown to shit instead of a sucking chest wound, you're going to use your tourniquet and save the occlusive dressing for the next causality.

Obviously, it's science fiction and simplicity of rpg style items makes things easier for everyone, so I'm more than cool with one time use items, although I'd imagine that properly stocking our surgery room might be more economical in the long run (and not getting shot up being even more economical than that).

I'm totally down for stocking some supplies here pretty soon. I mean, we devote 40% of our earnings to stuff like that. Speaking of which, what should I build with these robotics supplies I splurged on? I have a few Ideas, but like team input is never a bad idea.

I really need to find a good color for Dante's dialogue. What kind of darkling/standard mix do we have here?

I'm using the standard theme, personally.

Darkling here. Also, I am not gonna be able to handle the suspense here. I'm so interested to know what happens next!
