Holiday Forum RPG (IC): The Market [4/6]
« on: December 13, 2015, 07:25:29 am »

This is the IC for the Holiday Forum RPG. OOC, signups and information can be found here. Please refrain from posting anything OOC in this thread.

The Market:
Even though it would be several weeks until Saint Nicholas visited the Northern Lands again, the streets of the city of St. Nicholas were already buzzing with partying people. The stalls of the winter market had finally opened!  Every year, a few weeks before Claus’ visit, the greatest market of the Northern Lands would be built from the ground up, and this year was like any other. A delicious aroma of treats, both sweet and sour, hung in the air, making the mouth of every sane creature in the area water.  Hundreds of lanterns, candles and orbs of light lit the festive market. There were hundreds of stands, all selling different things: from thick coats of fur to the wild beasts that produced them, from lucky pebbles to amulets of pure mithril, and from innocent children’s toys to bloodied great swords. If you ever wanted to find something in the Northern Lands, this was the place to be. In the middle of the city’s central square, which also was exactly in the middle of the city-spanning market, stood a humongous pine tree. It had stood there before the city was built, and was called Nicholas’ Pine by the locals, even though it was older than Saint Nick himself.  The tree was filled with all kinds of decorations. Pure rubies were cut in a spherical form and hung all over the tree, small sculptures of enchanted ice dangled in the winds, and the tree itself was crowned by a tree-topper seemingly made out of pure light. Small birds made of this same radiant substance, nested in the tree and shrouded the tree and its surroundings in a warm, golden shade of light.

The amount of people who came to visit this fabled market was incredible. There were tribesmen, farmers, nobles, magicians and people of every profession one could possibly imagine. Even a select few wealthy and daring tourists from the southern continents paid a visit to the market, who formed an attraction of their own for the local inhabitants. Sometimes, even mythical creatures from the surrounding wilderness, such as unicorns, centaurs and harpies, came to visit.

This is also how Styn, the orcish paladin,  Zachary, the human marksman,  Morozhenoye, the snowman paladin, and Old Man Morozko, the Winter Mage, found their way to this legendary market. All of them are currently standing in front of Nicholas’ Pine, enjoying the wonderful sight of it. Just as a little beggar boy comes up to Old Man Morozko, loud screams and the devilish laughter of some goblins can be heard not far from them. It doesn’t take long until people can be seen running from the direction of the sounds, though their source is still unclear. What will you do?

Old Man Morozko hands the boy a coin, saying "You should run now."
With a smile for the beggar boy, Old Man Morozko turns and strides off purposefully towards the screams.

Stun was getting mildly irritated. He had been looking forward to the markets, there was nothing like them in his home city, but now it seemed that his visit would be interrupted. He sighed heavily then drew his mace and tapped the old man on the shoulder with it saying, "Wizard, let myself and," he pointed to the snowman, "Chelovek go first. It will be safer that way."

Zachary draws two bolts and fits them into his gauntlet-mounted crossbows. He also loosens his large knife in it's sheathe.

He speaks gruffly and with effort, "This's gonna be fun." Turning towards the other people around him who had volunteered to help, he said, "Hey, I got this."

Mug the goblins. Use the gains for an upgrade.

Old Man Morozko gives the man a dismissive wave of his hand. "I will join you, and see the innocents to safety."

"That's not very nice of you. Saint Nick knows," Old Man Morozko says, reciting the first part of the cliched saying.

"What? A pedophile who knows when kids are sleeping, awake and whether they've been bad or good? Sounds like the old guy shoulda been locked up many years ago." Zach chuckles, "In which case he knows all the stuff I've done and am due for my yearly lump of coal."

As the three of you hurry themselves to the source of the sound, you notice an unusual amount of crying women. Shrugging this aside, you continue your way, finding four kobolds, an orc, and two goblins in a cramped alley. All of them are wearing the garb of the cult of Krampus: black leather clothing, a cape the color of the darkest night and a faceless mask, with two goat-like horns attached to them. Those that had never seen Krampus could very well mistake one of these cultists for him.

Just as you arrive, you see one of the goblins shove a little boy in one of the two juten sacks the orc is carrying. The goblin shouts something in greenskin, and the orc hurries away. Now, the cultists have focussed their attention on you! Combat initiated!

Initiative rolls:
Goblin 2: 20+3=23
Zachary: 16+6=22
Morozko: 16+3=19
Styn: 10+2=12
Goblin 1: 5+3=8
The Kobolds: 6+1= 7

Moroz is close enough to join the fight at will

Goblin 2 lunges himself at Styn (2), but before he can hit, Styn beats him down with his shield, dealing (1) damage!
The party may attack.

Old Man Morozko is a bit taken aback by the stranger's comments. "You might want to watch your tongue, friend. This isn't Rudolfstown."

-snip-
"The orc! Quick, we must hurry!"
Old Man Morozko twirls the end of his staff around a little, and a small bursts of light spew out.

((How far away am I? I presume >50 meters as it is a fairly urban environment at the moment? Also what level are we? Lv 0 or Lv 1?))
Zachary lines up Kobold 1 and 4 with his wrist crossbows and fires at the two targets
If there is still time to reload and shoot, do so. If not,
Zachary draws his large bowie knife and stands beside Styn in a defensive stance, parry the blows coming from Styn's RIGHT side with the knife

"As I was saying I've been making a fortune from the coal. Do you know how much that stuff's worth?"

Styn looks down and growls at the fallen goblin, then swings his drawn mace towards the creatures head. He shouts as he is doing so, saying,

"Do not kill all of them! I would like to keep at least one alive to question it." He then shouts at the greenskins, asking them to surrender in their own language before turning to Zachary and saying,

"You amuse me human, that will keep you alive, for now at least."

Attack the damaged goblin, shout at the party to try and keep one enemy alive and yell at the greenskins to surrender!

Zachary lunges forward, shooting a bolt at Kobold 1 and Kobold 4! (17+6, 13+6) The first bolt hits Kobold 1 square between the eyes, downing him in an instant (+25 xp). The second bolt deals (3) damage. He draws his bowie knife, preparing to cover Styn's right flank.

The lanterns dangling from the ropes start shaking as Old Man Morozko tries to summon two lesser hearth spirits (16+5). Suddenly, all the little doors of the lanterns pop open, and an orange flow quickly starts coming out of them. The power of the lanterns however, doesn't even come close to the power of a burning hearth, so with the help of Old Man Morozko, these flows start taking on a humanoid form. As soon as the old wizard whispers: "The orc! Quick, we must hurry!", the three spirits speed away and lunge themselves at the orc, dealing (3,1,3) seven damage to the creature.

"Surrender you fools, before we kill you!" Styn yells at his opponents (13+2). Kobold 4, who is already gravely wounded and trying to pull an arrow out of his upper leg, looks at you and throws his weapon down (+25 xp), but the others remain unaffected. Styn slams his mace towards the fallen goblin, which is still trying to get up (15+3). He hits the goblin in his exposed side, dealing (5) damage, and flinging him away. The Goblin is clearly alive but not moving.

Goblin 1 moves towards the party
Kobold 2 strikes at Styn (12+1) vs. (4+1+3+2). Styn fails to block the attack, and the dagger slips between a crack in Styn's armor, puncturing his thigh, dealing 2 damage.
Kobold 3 strikes at Styn (1+1), but stumbles and manages to stab himself in his stomach, dealing 2 damage to himself.
The Orc throws one of his children-filled bags at the hearth spirits surrounding him (7+4) vs. (16), missing it and throwing the back against a wall. A cracking noise and wailing can be heard.
Goblin 2 moans.
