I had a human swordsman visitor end up dead in my tavern. I didn't find any puke, but then again I didn't notice until there was miasma floating around.

I'm sure that some fastidious dwarf came and cleaned up all that nasty puke, just probably missed the dead body.

Aren't corpses auto-forbid by default?

Yes, but I changed it to claim everything on death. It laid there awhile because I forgot to build a corpse stockpile.

I'm not even sure my Tavern Keeper is even doing her job. I suppose he could have drank himself to death, if it's that easy for it to happen that frequently. But I never got any combat reports.

I'm experiencing the same thing.  One of my dwarves managed to kill 53 other dwarves before being taken down.  Never went berserk, not a vampire, cant find a listed reason. Have a tavern.

Immoderate, likes-to-brawl dwarf soldier with a sword he'd grown attached to got into a brawl and spiraled into lethal combat?

That almost makes too much sense. Do soldiers in dwarf mode sheath their weapons, or always carry them around in hand?

The other 3 were probably topping up his goblet whenever he looked away. You're lucky it wasn't an important dorf.

I assumed this would be a vampire story too. I've had vampires strike in a crowded room, yet somehow, no witnesses. Sigh.

But no, this is definitely a tavern-keeper issue. I recommend not having one, I've got no puke and no alcohol poisoning, and I've never assigned a tavern keeper.

I also recommend indoor bars, as dorfs tend to clean up indoors, but not outdoors or in "light" areas.

It may not be related at all, but the other day in adventure mode I entered a Lord's Keep that had a lot of different races standing around in it, a Chieftess just walked up and murdered someone with a single blow.

...Sounds like a few bars in Kings Cross (Sydney, Australia). Nasty.

Easy way to tell if it's alcohol poisoning is to build a monument.  If it says they suffocated, then it is alcohol poisoning (for some reason, the puking damages the lungs).  People won't over drink of their own volition in DF, but if a tavern keeper or performer gives them a drink, they *will* over drink.  It has been reported that vampires will also drink alcohol if given a drink at a tavern (which makes them harder to track down).

So, the advice to avoid tavern keepers and performers is sound.  I do it anyway, though ;-)  Serving drinks is a low priority task, so if your tavern keeper/performer is busy (or if there are a *lot* of customers), then the probability of over drinking is actually quite low.  Mostly it seems to happen when you assign a tavern keeper that has few or no other jobs in the fortress.

Definitely +1 on the indoor taverns for puke/spilled alcohol/blood related reasons.  I like the idea of above ground taverns, but they will never get cleaned.

Serving drinks is a low priority task, but it still takes precedence over going to the trade depot and fulfilling broker responsibilities.

I've also noticed similar tendencies in my most recent, now dead fort. I had three different deaths, though oddly enough every dwarf that died of alcohol poisoning managed to stumble 2-10 tiles outside of my three-story tavern, then die, leaving their bodies as grim reminders of the liver's final and fruitless effort against the inevitable.

Far worse is when these bar fights that start cause a loyalty cascade. I was lucky in my most recent fort not to have had this, but every other fort I've put an inn in, it's caused a serious amount of trouble, as every bar fight seems to descend in a bloody Montagues vs. Capulets scenario.

The culprit is absolutely alcohol poisoning and has been an issue since taverns were released. It's because tavern keepers bring patrons too much alcohol, and they'll drink what's in the mug. If you put a sword in a mug in adventure mode they'll even drink it. The way to stop alcohol poisoning in taverns is to simply have no tavern keeper, everyone gets their own drinks instead.

For some reason, the ones being beaten to death usually don't fight back.

I'll keep an eye out in my tavern for that... I have to admit, I didn't notice than in my previous tavern where that behavior happened. To be fair, that might be because my legendary armorer killed a dwarf of my civ and local government with one punch to the head, and incited a loyalty cascade (which resulted in EVERYONE fighting back against EVERYTHING. Including breathing).

Loyalty cascades are hard because most everyone who *sees* the fight chooses a side and then they fight to the death.  If one breaks out in your tavern, the only thing you can do is lock the doors and wait.  If it spills outside of the tavern, then you need to contain it some other way.  This is one of the reasons I tend to put the tavern outside of the main fortress (and also because I hate visitors walzing through the fortress all the time).

One nice feature would be to have the fortress guard be able to stop the fighting and arrest everybody.  It would make the guard actually useful...

I guess yet another reason to have a way to cage/murder everyone in your tavern/probable most secure heart of fortress.

These brawl injuries remind me of the research for Military combat rooms when they would throw each other when training wrestling.  I believe the conclusion was to line the floors and walls with a low-density wood.  It seems density research is incomplete for current version however.

Well damn, i guess the guy i made tavern keeper who's last name is uthirsibrek goes back to being a worthless glazer. I picked him because his name looks a lot like Thirst Breaker at a glance, and i found it amusing.
