The Book Thread
« on: December 09, 2015, 03:12:25 pm »

I have yet to see a thread where we share some of the stupidest/most brilliant books ever written. So, I thought I'd start one today.

I thought this was a bug the first time I saw it.

Never knew a single squiggle could be considered a book.

Edit: Yay, I figured out how to spoiler.

Anything that's bound is counted as a book. I'm also pretty sure 1 page doesn't mean 1 squiggle.  :P I've never built a library yet. The one fortress I had that even tried making paper wound up falling to a weremole.

"One page untitled letter".

I'm almost certain that it's a squiggle. Still thought this was hilarious.

Mine isn't as funny, but is oddly specific.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

I like how it "was" a legendary silver-bound codex. :P

Well, once upon a time people wrote on paper and sent those inside "envelopes" to each other using something called a "postal service", a process that took days, weeks, or even months! Those things were called "letters". I would suggest the codex contains such a "letter" that doesn't have a title ("letters" frequently just started with phrases such as "Dear Sarah", and were then addressed to the person whose "address" was written on the "envelope"). The concept of "letters" went extinct shortly after the steam engine went out of fashion. A regular "postal service" has yet to be invented in the DF timeline, however.

Personal letters were sent long before there was a centralized state postal service.  They were carried by merchant caravans, or by special couriers (very expensive, typically only used by the nobility).  Delivery chances were probably pretty good, as long as the carrier wasn't killed by bandits.

Here are a couple prime specimens...

First, I give you "The Secret Music," a completely unhinged rant about a musical form, written by my rattlesnake man adventurer:

Second, I give you "The Student's Obsession":

I think it speaks for itself.

In my last fort, a dwarf wrote a book against himself.

My favorite book so far was, "Do we know the Mountain Homes?"

That's sure what it looks like. Nothing like getting beat to death by your own diary about becoming immortal.
