For the housing problem, I'd suggest the classic medieval solution: a big slum outside the city walls proper. Dirt floors, small buildings, and plenty of mud and stray animals- cheap and efficient. As for when a siege comes, well, you COULD bring everyone inside the safety of the walls- but you could also not. I think it'd add on to the period feeling we seem to be going for here.

And on top of that, who doesn't like horrible, squalid living conditions for the peasants?

Ohh, you can to a tean-to type shanty. 2x2 dirt floor, but only 1x2 is roofed over the bed and cabinet.

Exactly, that'd be perfect. You could build them right up against the wall.

Actually, we have spare room INSIDE the walls. They were built with a great deal of room to spare. Its open and away from everything important, with no roads or water nearby. So that still works.

I think it is indeed time for mass lean-to's. Better than unhappy thoughts from sleeping in the mud that got everywhere when we drained the area around the Queen's Mansion.

EDIT:
I'm also concerned that, while period-accurate, the concept of slaughtering peasants by the dozen each siege might result in terminal unhappiness for the rest of the population. Also, I think we might end up being the last bastion of humanity on earth soon. There's a large goblin force conquering all the other sites. Those peasants might become very valuable very soon.

You could also make it hellishly difficult to move through and use it as a sort of defense against invaders. I am of the opinion that making something complex makes it better, or at least allows it to rack up a higher body count.

We have a rich tradition of percussion instruments as well, all of which are based around a musician smacking variously sized hollow rocks.
It was quite brutal actually. Who knew you could suffer major head trauma from undergarments?

Just a dense maze of crappy buildings and twisty walkways? That sounds like it'd work pretty well. You could station archers on the lean-to roofs and everything.

As for the whole psychological impact, yeah, it'd probably be better to build the shantytown inside the walls. Maybe you could extend it into lower levels, if things get really cramped- living underground is terrible and all, but beggars can't be choosers.

Glorious monarchic-communist inhabitation towers are clearly the answer.

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

I can picture the squatter quarters now:

Code: [Select]
z+1   z+0
++++  ####  # = walls
++++  #bf#  +=floor, b=bed, f=cabinet
v..v  ^++^  .=open space, v,^=ramp

Doors are for people. I think I'm going to start dividing the city into sectors. You and your family get to move from the Dystopian Failure Quarter or whatever we call it if you hit legendary or otherwise commit an act of heroic notice. As of now, the North-eastern section is designated as the future Filthy Peasant Quarter. Central + South is where the artisan's shops are, and the western side of the city is evolving into a noble's district.

This is what I signed up for as human, a legendary baby maker.  How many rebel kids did Sanctumea pop out so far?

None yet, they are just lovers. I've got a 2x2 love shack set up to start passing couples through to move em' along to tying the knot. You're next. (ominous)

Also, I need an archer Captain. Any takers?
