Interesting and Odd occurrences
« on: May 22, 2008, 10:48:00 am »

I do not know how many of you play many successive forts in the same world, before scrapping it, but it seems some really strange and nifty things can occur.  I am on about my 8th fort in this world gen, and I have seen a few things that look to be based my own history.

One fort had an artifact that referenced a picture of a sapphire animal trap on it.  Now I think it is safe to say this had to be the same trap made in the previous fort I had abandoned.  You don't just some across sapphire animal traps everyday!  I wonder if artifact worth makes it more famous and more likely to be referenced in later forts, this one being sapphire and loaded with gewgaws was worth a bundle.

My current fort, in about its fifth year has yet to have the dwarf liaison show up.  Caravan is coming as per normal though.  I am convinced this is because the previous fort had the liaison ambushed and killed, and both the forts are in the same dwarf home sphere.

Lastly, I just had a really oddball dragon occurrence last night.  So I get the big ol' dragon has arrived notice, and I am all prepared to easily capture this guy.  So in he waltzes right over the cage traps.  “Uh oh”, I think, never had that happen.  Maybe they do fly in hops?  Oh well, nasty legendaries are around the next corner, guess I will have me some dragon steaks instead.  So dragon waltzes by legendaries, everyone standing around like it's all cool.  Er hmmm, what is the deal?  Down the hall he goes past haulers and the like.  Ok, time to inspect this guy a little more carefully.  What the?!?  He is already tamed??

So basically I have a tamed dragon show up, and I am trying to rack my brain whether I abandoned any forts with a live tamed dragon or not.  Usually they were dead from what I can remember.

It's a fantasy of mine to build a continual huge fortress across the entire world by embarking multiple times in Dwarf Mode, then running through it all in Adventure Mode. There'd be hundreds of artifacts, thousands of adamantite items, so much goodies, all the named monsters, etc.

About two or three game years ago there was siege in my current fortress, Okbomrek. There were a couple of casualties among my soldiers and one idiot mechanic who felt the need to go outside. The traps took care of half the gobboes, soldiers took down the rest. No big deal really.

Not long after this siege a dwarf goes into a strange mood, proceeds to claim a craftsdwarfs workshop and grabs only a stack of goblin bones. I wait. A little while later we have "Betantun" a goblin bone armor stand.

Flash forward 2.5 game years. There's another siege. Nothing my champions and traps couldn't handle. Something interesting happens during cleanup...

Now, I generally just dump 90% of the goblins gear into the local chasm. Even the giant cave spider goods. The fort produces enough crafts to buy out any caravan that comes by anyhow. I don't know what possessed me to look at the heavily decorated bronze crossbow lying in a pool of gobbo blood, but I did. On the crossbow is an image of a goblin bone armor stand in magnetite.

I am stunned by this. So the basic sequence of events is...
1: Goblins siege
2: Goblins are defeated
3: Dwarf is inspired to make a goblin-based memorial to the victory.
4: Some goblin somewhere is inspired to engrave an image of this object, (made of one of their kin!) onto a weapon.
5: Goblin wields crossbow in battle, with an engraved reminder of why they hate dwarves.

Awesome. Just awesome.
