Is it safe to copy old Fortress to new version?
« on: December 04, 2015, 12:12:42 pm »

In general, is it a thing to bring forward old Fortresses to a newer version? Does it depend on how far apart they are? For example shall I start one with 0.42.01 with 0.42.02 probably coming soon?

(Usually I'd just start over but this is for a "project" so I'd rather not start over.)

In general it is never a good idea to copy over saves from something like 0.40.xx to 0.42.xx. It's a risk to go from 0.42.01 to 0.42.03 or something like that. Bugfixes are sometimes safe but big releases are generally not. Too much changes in big releases.

0.42.01 is save-compatible up to 0.40.03. In Toady's words:

Old forts will load, but they won't have art forms so you'll be missing the singing and dancing. Probably other stuff too.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

I would avoid major versions (40.xx -> 42.xx) but I think people copy between minor versions pretty often.

You can definitely transfer saves, though some jiggery-pokery with the raws may be required. You won't be able to make bookcases, among things, but you will be able to operate taverns and temples just fine.

In a bit of an unusual case, 0.42 doesn't actually break save compatibility, but all that really means is whether or not they load at all.
How many bugs are (re-)introduced by doing so, is anybody's guess. Not even to mention the fact that the new content will be missing.
Best to just start a new world. Keep playing on the old version if you're attached to that fort.
