I have no idea how large their dev team is either. Anyway I welcome the free changes, not really interested in the DLC

you can tell they're pretty down on the quality of the game still because the pre-order "season pass" (or whatever they called it) was actually expanded to include this DLC too

it's like they recognize that they're not remotely at the point of being able to ask as many people to shell out more for extra DLC at this point

honestly i wouldn't be shocked if we didn't see another HOI game ever, especially given the success of Stellaris.

The expansion pass promised 2 DLC for a combined cost of at least $50. So either the HoI4 team thought they could go back to HoI3/EU3/Vicky2/whatever style expansions or had completely ignored Paradox's DLC policies and pricing for the last few years. Either way the pass has been expanded to 4 DLC (which is to say it'll include the one after Waking the Tiger).

It sounds to me that they fucked up with the price/value of the expansion pass and wanted to retain the goodwill of their customers. If Paradox thought that people wouldn't buy DLC for HoI4 then I doubt that they'd continue development on the game, regardless of how big or small the dev team is.

I think it's a combination of factors. The fact that you got less of a game (as in, less features and most of them not nearly fleshed out to be engaging long term) on release than with HoI3 and that now you have to pay more to get the same amount of game is probably turning off some people. Also, getting bite sized improvements here and there every several months or more is hardly enough to get people back into playing if they've gotten bored of the game quickly after release.

I know none of the new free features are terribly exciting on their own and same goes for the ones gated by the DLC, the new command system is neat but it's a minor expansion on the order of battle stuff that was present in 3, so why did we have to wait almost two years and a DLC pack for it to come to 4? If all the DLC so far was bundled and offered as a single expansion of sorts I think I might be more inclined to check out the new content, as is, I'll prolly wait until most of it comes out before getting it on a sale, essentially treating it as a big expansion pack.

I never bought into the season passes and for paradox games I just wait a few years and the DLC is always on some 80% off sale. The free improvements give me an excuse to reinstall and fuck around for a little while in the game, rope a buddy into a few games, then uninstall again. In that way I usually get a few hundred hours out of the games over time.

I don't like season passes in general.  In my experience you either end up paying for content you don't care about, or the value of the season pass is less than the DLC.  Sometimes even in stated price, but other times because the game is poorly received and the DLC content is half-hearted.

Paradox's current business model seems like it was a response to positive user feedback (both in words and wallets) from the CK2 DLC.  So I imagine they wouldn't want to sacrifice that goodwill just to save money on a secondary title.

On a different topic... has the AI learned how to play yet?  I like this game but my big complaints were that the AI doesn't know how to retreat from encirclement, and that the AI doesn't understand how to produce and use advanced units (AKA anything that isn't infantry).

The AI definitely knows when it's being encircled and will move units out as needed. Unless you pin them down in battle. Producing and using advanced units... Not so much, but it's probably better than before. Germany, the Soviets and other major powers definitely know to make medium tank divisions and so on, so I assume it's a opportunity cost thing. The AI would rather build infantry than invest industry into tanks, unless it has a ton of industry to invest.

It is only a matter of time until we get Miroslavs in space.

In case anyone here has Stellaris as well:

Now, all we need is a Stellaris-CK2 converter and we're all set.

You know... I wonder if anyone has tried hooking up the Stellaris portraits to CK2.  Could make a neat original fantasy world without that much work.

Apparently there is an Attila Total War to CK II fan converter in the works as well so you can go even further back.

On the topic of HoI IV, does Death or Dishonor add much to the game if you don't plan playing the countries with new focus trees? I haven't played enough to know if updating equipment or licencing tech is a big deal.

Death or Dishonour doesn't add too much to the game, unfortunately. Equipment conversion is criminally underused in the base game (though less so in many mods) and licence production is such a non-factor in single player (though it has its uses in multiplayer). The puppet interactions are nice but not critical. Basically Death or Dishonour isn't really needed if you aren't playing one of the nations with added focus trees.

DoD is hardly nesessary IMO. License production was a disappointment, I rarely have found myself using it. But I think the next dlc will have more value than the two previous ones.

Teaser about tomorrows dev diary. I assume this means we can finally intercept supply carrying transports in next patch.
