That Mexico vs US stream is on again. It's by John from EscapistMagazine on twitch. Makes for fairly funny viewing, considering the joys of US politics right now.

And yep, the Aussies are still floating around patrolling the Caribbean. I really hope they end up doing something really annoying soon.

Emmm... am I imagining things or is the air warfare just crazy slaughter? It seems after the initial DoW, hundreds of planes get shot down in a matter of hours. While historically, there could be days without major aerial contact between opponents since finding the enemy in the air was pretty difficult. (Ignoring Battle of Britain and other major air campaigns.)

Haven't played the game yet but considering the initial hostilities between Germany and the Soviets it doesn't seem that far away. Not saying it should be the norm though and if it keeps going on that rate...

Well, over two years at war with Germany. I've lost a total of ~250 planes, with about only ~25 to combat. In perspective, most of these losses occured in the first year of the war where my air force ranged from 200-800 planes depending on how quickly I could produce, refit, and train new air wings. In the last year my air force ranges from between 1000-2000 planes, but has suffered a fraction of the losses.

These are modern, well-equipped planes.

EDIT: also whose everyone playing as the first time around? Holland for me.

Weird, I tried Finland and cheated techs as a tutorial experience. During first day of the Winter War, Soviets lost ~1000 planes and I lost ~400 planes in combat. Zero casualties from AA or accidents. Soviets are getting air supremacy anyway since I'm almost out of planes.

Had, some good fun as Germany. Was staging a massive 100+ division assault of England, was moving ships into position to secure the passage, and I must've left the staging arrow on, so Guderin took his troops across and managed to set up a foothold in southern England while I wasn't looking. I dunno how he got there, the channel was full of enemy ships. He's a real hero. With the massive air support I had, he ended up taking all of the UK on his own.

Never invade Russia during the winter. Weather penalties in this game are brutal

Apperently you can take england with 6 transport planes and 6 paratroopers.

I always found the Static AA and ground AA to be to weak in the previous games, I don't think much changed here.

Well realistically, AA should cause mostly morale damage and make the enemy squadrons break up their attacks. They didn't cause that many casualties, but blocked planes from using certain airspaces effectively. (Special cases like ship AA versus naval planes excluded.)

Spent a bit more time playing today. Trade system is... remarkably straightforward.

Well my first run was as Falangist Poland, but that didn't work out too great because the Reich refused to commit enough troops to the Ostfront for the Axis to make any headway there. My second run as the USA was much better - Japan stayed out of the war so I could bring my full might to bear on Western Europe, and the war was over by '41.

So, it's suprisingly hard to find some numbers and good sources on this, but ground based anti-air weapons - while utterly useless at the start of the war, actually became very good around 1944.

Quote
In 1944 Flak accounted for 3,501 American planes destroyed, enemy fighters shot down about 600 less in the same time period.

Quote
More flak guns gradually appeared, mainly the 128mm ( 5 in ) German Flak accounted for 50 of the 72 RAF bombers lost over Berlin on the night of March 24th, 1944. An incredible 56 bombers were destroyed or crippled by flak during a B-17 raid on Merseburg in November of 1944.

I didn't play HoI IV yet, so I don't know if it improved the deadlyness of ground AA in anyway.

After beefing up my forces, and fortifying the border, it's now 1941 in my Republic of Spain game, Germany instead of DoWing me as I expected moved their attention to basically every other northern European country with limited success. Denmark surrendered, but then they declared on Finland(which white peaced Russia), and Sweden which both promptly joined the allies. So Now in 1941 the allies are staging D-Days all over Europe. They have at least 4 beachheads raging from Northwest France, to the South of Italy, to just north of Berlin from Sweden!

Anyone else see Germany get picked away so early on? ( I have historical focuses on)

Wondering if I should seize the opportunity with the Axis moving almost all their forces off the Vichy border to em... liberate France. (The allies won't let me in their club because they don't appreciate my socialist tendencies :p )

Hey guys I am wondering how noob friendly this game is.

I am thinking of getting it for my Father but he hasn't really played games since the Doom era and the only game he liked recently was that Wolfenstien game from about a decade back.

He also liked the Panzer General series and while that is nothing like this game, that is the general area I am thinking about.
