Is it just me or do world gens now take much longer?
« on: December 02, 2015, 05:01:56 pm »

I assume the game world is doing a lot more now than it used to, because I would estimate that world gen is taking at least 3 time longer than it used to.

Not that big a deal, but was just curious if anyone else noticed this as well, or if somehow something changed with my system.

That's funny, because for me it seems faster. Not too much faster, but definitely quicker.

What is the variance between your Entities and Dead in world generation?

Speed of the world gen is bottlenecked hard by the amount of living people. Also, it's been a rule of thumb since 40.24 to never make worlds bigger than Medium size.

What's the reason behind that? I love my large worlds with lots of civs and short histories so...

Larger worlds houses a bigger population of individual entities; in 40.24 that slowed the game down since active world generation in the background became a thing. "FPS death" became more prevalent with fortresses slowing down significantly by year 2 or 3.

Well there is a bit more stuff happening during worldgen now. So id expect a bit of slowdown.

Though most worldgen attempts ive had have been crashed.

Did take about 4 hours for a larger worl with max civs sites beasts savagry and minerals to make it to the longest possible history

World Gen seems slower to me on my i5 4690k @ 4.5 Ghz than it was on my old, dead Core 2 Duo E8600 @ 3.66.

Interestingly enough we're both using Haswells.

I find with each upgrade world gen has been getting slower as it gets more feature packed, I usually play with a 50 year history for fear of waiting a year for each year of simulation

I've decided to be more patient with the game. If I'm genning a world, I set the parametres to exactly what I know I will give me a workable world, let it do its thing. Grab a coffee, read, hop on to another computer or something for 10-15 minutes.

They said the walls were impregnable. You didn't have to prove me wrong by giving birth on them.

good luck with that. RNG guarantees anomalies such as dead dwarven civ, missing civs, overpowered/underpowered civs/ridiculously stupid world name, etc

i usually gen about 20 worlds before i get a perfect one, where every civ is more or less balanced and there arent any elf dark fortresses. of course, if you fancy of playing those kinds of games, i guess nobody can tell you otherwise  :P

i also see no point in playing huge worlds. i usually play with only 5 civs (one for each race) so that it gets very streamlined and not confusing. i also make words that attempt to prevent the "a great beast has been harassing our people! go to the other side of the world, across the ocean through impassible mountains to get there!" type of annoyances. when everyone is accessible and connected, adventure mode is so much more fun. i suppose when it  gets more commute features then we could be arguing the efficiency of this

For all who is willing let's perform a simple experiment, for science.

Load up *absolute vanilla* DF 42.02
Design New World with Advanced Parameters
Medium Region
Get a precise timer/stopwatch ready
Start Timer at the same time you start world gen.
Three minutes of world gen, three successful times.
Post results.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit.

Result: 1
2:30 - World generation crashed at approximately year 163.

Result: 2
Age of Myth
Year: 179
Hist Figs: 36319
Dead: 19118
Events: 273377

Result: 3
Age of Myth
Year: 187
Hist Figs: 33553
Dead: 17014
Events: 274089

Result: 4
1:26 - World generation crashed at year 129

Result: 5
The Age of Myth
Year: 183
Hist Figs: 34288
Dead: 17835
Events: 274267

So, after 3 minutes the world gen had a range 8 years, from 179 to 187 and crashed 2/5 times.
