Nos3y, you have a light grey injury from sparring, but that'll soon heal.  I don't remember how badly damaged you were in the battle, but I don't think it was very extensive.

Apparently the gem cutters had been unable to cut just the right gem, because the pump operator fell into melancholy.  She crawled around the fort, babbling, and shedding her clothes, to the dismay and pity of the other dwarves.

Kroma brought the news.  The babbling pump operator had managed to find her way into Kroma's statue garden and had fallen over the edge into the chasm.  Although there was no body to recover, a grave was marked for the poor dwarf.

10th Obsidian, 1055
Another flying menace had been sighted, this time a giant eagle.  And it wasn't staying near the chasm.  The first dwarf to sight it was a miller, out gathering sand for the ever-hungry glass furnaces.  The eagle apparently decided that the dwarf would make a nice lunch, and nabbed her.  Watson commanded Silverus's squad of marksdwarves to take down the creature.  But the eagle had other plans.  Having developed a taste for dwarf, it was casting about for its next victim and found it when an unfortunate craftsdwarf crossed its path while going to collect the remains of the miller.  The eagle swooped on this new tidbit just before the marksdwarves finally arrived, too late to save the doomed dwarf.  The next few moments were a blur as arrows rained down on the flying menace, but the marksdwarves were easily victorious.

"Why did the craftsdwarf go out in the first place, when he knew that there was a flying menace around?"  Surath asked.

"Isn't that obvious?  The dead can't be left to rot!  Not even for the few hours it would take to remove the menace!"  Several of the dwarves were in agreement.

Surath just grimaced and thought, ask a stupid question....

Surath found it hard to believe that Cursemountains had survived five years in its harsh environs.  But survive they had, and even thrived.

Created Wealth: 866,621*
Weapons: 6,755*
Armor & Garb: 7,800*
Furniture: 159,915*
Other Objects: 258,124
Architecture: 94,392
Displayed: 19,470*
Held/Worn: 320,165*

Imported Wealth: 339,106*
Exported Wealth: 3,998*

They also had an immense surplus of food, and enough booze to keep everyone very drunk for almost two years.

"The goblins have returned!"  One of the engravers came barreling down the hallway.

"How many?" asked Watson.

From atop the newly completed siege tower, Taalen replied, "4 spearmen, 1 crossbowman, 4 axemen, 5 swordsmen, 4 macemen, 5 pikemen, 2 pikemasters, 7 bowmen.  Distributed in two squads, one coming from the east, one from the west."

Nosey was itching for battle, the winter had been too quiet for his tastes.  "Let me at 'em!  I'll teach 'em to come here lookin' for easy pickin's!"

Watson set about preparing for the defense, ordering all non-military dwarves inside and stationing his various squads to the best effect to cover the entry.

"Fire at will!"  Commanded Watson to the siege operators.

"Fire what?"

"The catapults of course! The ones in the siege tower."

"Umm, those catapults aren't complete yet."

"What do you mean they're incomplete?  Their construction was ordered last autumn!"

"Well yes, but the siege engineer hasn't yet finished assembling them.  Arnar nabbed him for his proj--"

"Blast Arnar!  All he thinks about is his flying contraption.  Well, he'll see how well he can fly when the goblins kill us all because of his lollygagging."

And Watson, grumbling, proceeded to alter his defensive plans.  Silverus's marksdwarves had just become the first line of defense after the traps.  The other squads, comprising Nosey's axedwarves, Taalen's macedwarves and the three unarmed squads would provide the second line of defense.  With any luck, the third would not be needed.

The goblins arrived at the front gate, and a metalsmith became the first casualty of the battle when she went to clean one of the traps that had claimed a goblin's life.  Watson promptly ordered the wrestling squad with the least training to prevent any other civilians from leaving the fort on pain of death.

Silverus's marksdwarves were decimating the attacking goblins, raining arrows into the mob and wounding many.  Nosey was the first of the other soldiers to join battle and proceeded to lead the dwarven sortie, killing every goblin he encountered.  One of his squad-mates decided to do battle with two bowman and a pikemaster at once and paid the price.  Nosey, however, avenged him immediately, killing off the pikemaster and a bowman, while the other bowman fled.

Panicking at the sight of this seemingly invincible dwarf, the goblins turned tail and fled.  The dwarves gave chase, determined to kill as many invaders as possible.  Of the invading army, less than a dozen escaped with their lives.

Watson told Surath the reason why the catapults had not been used in the defense of the fortress.  Annoyed, she called both Arnar and the siege engineer into her office, asking Watson to sit in on the meeting.

"Arnar, I have been patient, I have been tolerant, but this has to stop!  First it was the traps, now it's the siege engines.  You can't take any dwarf you please away from his or her duties just to work on that crazy flying project of yours!  The fort's needs must come first."

"You'll be in an excellent position to find out what a hammering feels like if this keeps up," added Watson, even more displeased than Surath.

Arnar promised, "It won't happen again, I swear!"

"See that it doesn't.  And you," addressing the siege engineer, "don't do anything other than those siege engines until they're complete and operational.  Back to work, both of you."

The siege engineer nodded and trotted off to his siege engines.  Arnar left, but before he got ten feet down the hall, he was back to thinking over the new ideas he'd been discussing with the engineer.

Korbin, the ever reliable architect/engraver/mason who had created so much of the fort's construction, had been possessed by the spirits of this place and claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop, to Kroma's annoyance.  Why unskilled dwarves insisted on periodically kicking her, or one of her colleagues, out of their work areas, she didn't understand.  And all to create mostly worthless items, except when they descended into madness.

Surath was a bit concerned, for Korbin was a good friend, but as he proceeded to grab camel leather and marble and set to work, she was reassured.  She wouldn't have to bury another friend.

Korbin sauntered over to Surath when she was eating her lunch.  "Well?  What do you think?"

"Think of what?"  And then she noticed it.  On his head.  A crown.

"Who died and made you king?" she chuckled.

"I just made it.  Isn't it great?"  And he took it off and handed it to her.  "Everyone else likes it."

Surath inspected it.  Korbin had decorated it with camel leather and, as if making it out of marble weren't enough, had proceeded to decorate and encrust it with even more marble.

"I've named it Tumamusur.  It seemed appropriate."  Tumamusur, Moralspoiled.

Surath sighed, and didn't even try to change his mind.  Through the years she'd learnt that it would be fruitless.  But, for all its marble, the crown still had a low value, only 9,600* if she judged correctly.  But Korbin was so proud of it that she didn't want to spoil it, so she just smiled and praised him.

More migrants had arrived.  Wonderful, 21 more mouths to feed, as if they didn't already have enough, Surath thought.  Several of them Watson promptly drafted, as more military was always needed, and the three new miners were sent to Bricktop, so that he could direct them in the mines.  The others were put on hauling duty for the present.
