How do we deal with the wererats?

Scare them into the deeper parts and cave in parts of the cavern, sealing them in
Take out their leaders and try to convince them to surrender
Slaughter them all
Ignore them and look elsewhere

Hey bro. James. Nods his head.

We may want to go back to the ships. You know, if you're like me and don't want to die.

He smiles uneasily.

James smiles mechanically in return, his eyes scanning behind Martijn, his crossbow held casually enough in his arms, but a bolt ready.

"I take it you found some of the cave dwellers... wererats, I'm guessing? Yeah, I don't fancy trying to take more then one at a time."

James starts walking with Martijn and Arioch in the direction of the ships, hoping Ritiki notices where they're headed.

Lost in thought, Arioch thinks about the situation.

"This might just be one of those cases where talking will not help. To settle down we need to sweep the surroundings and clear the mine. They must be exterminated. The woods are pretty far away though so I doubt there'll be a surprise attack here on the plains.

So the question is, do we want to do it now or bring everybody here and do it some other day? We have Ewan right now and with Mauricio out of line and Kylie protecting everybody. The only way we can bolster our forces more is by asking Varg to join us for this hunt.

My suggestion would be to go back on the river with the boats, drop Martijn and I to pickup Varg and then bring everybody here and start setting a camp."

As someone who has some experience with remaining unseen, these lands present ample opportunity for stealth. They are already circling around.

However, they only had knives. Whilst I know how deadly these things can be, I doubt they have such skilled teachers as I had. Back to the ships and pick up Varg - but also some of the new soldiery from those last ships that James here admirably brought in. If we're going to found a city, then we ought to treat these as any sneaking, knifewielders in the dark - and that means militia.

As he talks tactics, Martijn's usual disinterest fades.

Of course, we could always open up diplomacy with them.
He shrugs.

"You would not be suggesting extermination solely based on what they look like, would you?" Ritiki grumped aloud, having caught up in time to catch the last few paragraphs. "Perhaps they just want to see who these new people are. If that's the case then of course we should try talking."

"If I see a human eyeing me with a knife I would be confident I would not like this person.

However by all means if you so wish I shall aid you in negotiations. Still, I find it funny wererats live in silver mines. Doesn't just the smell of it disturb them, Martijn? I think you had some experience in this area."

James makes a face " Speciesism aside, on a practical level, we can't take on an entire tribe on our own. I can manage maybe one lycanthrope a day, and we only have silver...ish weapons for three of us. Militia won't be able to defend themselves and may end up infected themselves. If we can talk, that may be better, otherwise we need to get some of the tribes on our side."

James nods with an expression of grudging respect to Martijn "Good to see there's something that you are interested in. I'm sure She would approve of your martial fervor, but personally I'd like to have the odds tilted more in our favor, or get them working with us."

Ewan catches wind of your conversation and throws in his two coppers.

"I don't remember if it was Ulf or Borg who told us, but I recall that one of them mentioned that the clan that resides in that cave system there were hostile. And if Martijn is right, and they ARE readying weapons, perhaps it may not mean they are willing to speak, as much as I would prefer to do so.

I agree with Arioch. Having Varg here will help not only in the sense of having someone extra with a weapon that can harm them, but he may have fought them before and may know how to deal with them. Either way, I don't think we can safely protect the crew from them. Did you see how many there were, Martijn?"

((Because I forgot to say, you saw three))

In response to Arioch:
Some experience? Martijn frowns at him. Luck grant me that I never have experience. He shrugs. I've heard tales, that is all, same as the rest of you. They aren't supposed to like silver, but who knows?
In response to Ewan:
Three that I know of, but who knows how many in the caves or still in hiding? Besides, it only takes one bite....

"I don't think silver works like wolfsbane on them. And if you had access to the tools that allowed you to kill your foes, and you halted your enemies from obtaining it? It makes for a great tactical advantage.

If these are indeed wererats, we may have more than just lycanthropy to deal with... Some stories say they aren't the most sanitary-"

He looks at Ritiki as he finishes his sentence and then stumbles a bit on his words.

"-a-although, i-it does mean all of them are like that?

Make a decision, I'm going to prepare the boat either way..."

His face turns red from forgetting the ratfolk was present as he walks towards the boats, embarrassed about the comment he just made. The other ten men start to ready up to leave.

Ritiki gave the boat captain's back a bit of an evil eye but said nothing about it.

"In any case, I vote for trying to meet with wererats. Perhaps mutually beneficial trade can be arranged so we can get silver."

James looks back and forth between Ritiki and Arioch, Ewan and Martijn. "I'm with Ritiki, but I also think we should indeed pick up Varg for his insight into that tribe, and to have an extra blade on our side. They know we're here, so a surprise attack would be impossible. Nothing is lost from trying to talk to them, and if they prove to be hostile anyway, we'll appreciate having him."

Absent mindedly rubbing the hilt of his jewelled dagger, Martijn agrees.

"Very well. I gave my word that if you so desired we shall try to negotiate. I'm sure that if we pickup Varg we can fend for ourselves even without the element of surprise.

Shall we get him and everybody else here?"

((What element of surprise? They were watching us from the cave entrance, and those three would have to be monumentally stupid to not have had a fourth that they sent back to the tribe to let them know that outsiders are hanging around.))
