You don't need to boot from a hard drive to read its files. I guess I should be more specific in case you don't know much about computers, but it's really fairly commonplace if a Windows installation gets corrupted, for example, to boot up Linux on a USB stick and copy the files you can save using the file explorer in Linux. You don't need to boot from the hard drive in that case.

Amelia spent the next five seconds waiting for a response while being :I in the meantime, keeping her eyes focused only on the ship computer.

"Trent, Neil, Dio, status report please? Does anyone have any indication of what just happened?"

She turned back to the computer and then connected the obvious flashing warning to what could presumably happen.

Quote from: thanks for the edit, narrator adwarf
With the drives in hand you head to the bridge to copy the data and try to open the files from one of the ship's computers which greets you abruptly with a flashing screen across all the ship's computer screens that reads,

"Forcing System Lockdown, Unknown Hardware. Input Access Code for ESDP #457 please."[...]

"...Dio, did you do anything with the ship's computer?"

"...I think I'll need the ship's computer for a moment. Not now though, I'm rebooting everything..."

undo whatever crap I just did and boot from our ship's hard drive again to get things back to normal.
Unplug it

"By the way, does anyone have a personal computer to donate for the sake of a backup server? I would like to keep our life support systems running in case we catch a cold."

"Argh, that's military-grade tech! You don't insert that into our ship--especially when you don't know what's happened to it! Unplug that connection, now, before it gets permanent! This must've been what stopped that fighter. Unplug it please."

"Permanent connection? I think the computers would shut down before the headers get that warm.
Anyway, it might take some time to reboot. I don't know how long, but it can't be more than an hour, can it...?"

Get to the bridge, or was I already there?

”Dio… I don’t know what you did or were doing, but please be more careful…”

Check my captain’s notes for Access Code for ESDP #457…

”Amelia, what’s the status of everything other than the engines? Armament? Sensors?”

”Amelia, what’s the status of everything other than the engines? Armament? Sensors?”
"Everything is functioning normally--all our engines are down however. While we await the results of an unplugged ship computer, I could infer that given Dio's actions we may have chanced upon a trove of greased treasure we haven't expected: That being the fighter, and an active working military computer. That said, we lack the license for utilizing a military computer, hence I am not activating or have activated the distress signal."

"Uhm.... What was that noise? What happened?"
"Ehh-"
Amelia sorted a tl;dh version for those who didn't hear her communications.
"The ship navigation computer got rebooted and is now running on a different OS. I can't find the start button and Dio is fixing it. The sooner we get back to restarting, the better, because changing the Operating System tore right through our OS' firewalls. Because that was a military OS from what I remember inspecting the fighter."

"Thanks Amelia. Well, keep a sharp eye on the sensors while we're immobilised, and run a quick check that the weapons are on standby, huh..."

Tk sighed and rubbed his forehead. Other people, sure, he could protect against them, but he would've hoped the others knew what they were doing enough that whoever had been screwing around with the ship hadn't just doomed them all.

Start stripping the military fighter; might as well be productive while waiting.

"Well, you could help TK out or come up here and put another pair of eyes on the sensors, so to speak, I guess. We're sitting here helpless but I don't know there's alot we can do just yet... Worst case scenario is pirates or whoever attacked that ship come by, and all we can do is be sorta nearly kinda prepared... Ug."

"Given that I have no idea how to scrap a ship, I'll go inside and watch the sensors."

Return inside our own ship, and scan the sensors for any enemy activity.

So, er, how goes the update?
Due to the increase in the amount of time I work recently (60+ hours a week currently) I have little time for running games alongside dealing with real life, what little relaxation I can get, and such. Currently this game is on an indefinite hiatus, most likely dead unless my current situation changes.
