Stupid elves and their stupid trees
« on: May 21, 2008, 02:37:00 pm »

So this obnoxious elf diplomat just dropped by and warned my dwarves of cutting down more of their precious trees.

Since I have no plans of stopping the chopping will the elves attack me? And if so are they any dangerous? Because my ragtag defense militia arent exactly the killing machines they boast about to the ladydwarves down by the sasquatch-cage

Elves are hilarious hypocrites. My dwarfs are currently building a giant obsidian tower in the middle of a desert and my only source of wood is the yearly elf caravan. They sell nothing but wood. NOTHING BUT.

Elves with wooden weapons? Nothin' to worry about there...

Elves with bows... Well, I recommend sitting inside and filling them with bolts from a nice, fortification-walled room by the entrance, as they'll avoid any traps the elf diplomat saw (or so I'm told.)

I haven't had a Elf siege in .. a while (since 2d).

What I remember from that is that Angry Elves send a siege party armed with the fear inspiring weapon of the DF universe, Bows. And they're fast. Really fast. It might be a good idea to stop chopping till you've either got some traps ready for them, or your Dwarves can stand up to the meat-grinder of Goblin sieges without batting an eye.

Aren't elf and human sieges temporarily turned off?

I THINK elves can still send smaller "ambushes" if you piss them off enough.

Elves, what the heck? Everything they trade is made out of wood and they get mad if you make and things out of wood? I seriously don't get it. They're a bunch of crazy. And those rope reed clothes... just... terrible... :P

It's based on how much wood you have, not how much you chop.  So get going on those bins and barrels.

I was beseiged by Humans in this version, so I guess the seiges aren't turned off.  Or maybe it was Humans from a Goblin tribe, but they were riding horses and had no Goblins with them.

Just so you know, possession of home-grown tower caps counts as cut lumber for the Elves too, even though those are clearly dried fungus stalks.

I don't understand why they get mad when you chop wood when they do it all the time.  :-\

They want to keep their monopoly on the wood industry.

If you gave them a biome then the Elves may indeed start turning up with Wagons in cages.
Well, it does tie in to the fact that personality-wise, dragons are nothing more than gigantic, scaly, firebreathing cats.

And they tell us that they have as special method, you know, one that doesn't end up with the thousands of innocently slain trees crying out for eternal vengeance on your furry head. So the Elves tell us anyway.

To the dorf pulling the lever, the lever is just a lever. The magma pouring out of the mountainside is just a coincidence. To the dorf designing a pump stack from the magma sea, it is just that: a pump stack. No specific reason for it. It will never do anything.
for reasons best knows to themselves, the elves decided to explode

Human sieges do occur.

I'm fairly sure one way to spark it is to claim a lot of their stuff during the times they come to trade. Haven't tested it myself because I'm much too nice.

Easier way though is to have a human noble or liaison die in your fort. They don't like the fact that you failed to provide help. Or something.

There are two separate ways the elves evaluate wood.

The first is used before the Elven Diplomat starts giving you the third degree. Every year when the caravan shows up, the number of logs sitting in stockpiles is checked. Too much wood ticks them off and sends the diplomat.

The second method is used once you've signed onto the low-wood-use treaty. In the second case, they've left a spy (or something) and will count how many logs you cut. If you go to the civilization screen, you can see the treaty. You can also see how many logs you've cut since you signed the treaty.
