We only have a limited amount of time, and if we try to scope out jaderoot and fail then we're kind of screwed. Jaderoot gathering is something we should probably do in the morning, when we have much more time and the ability to really look outside of the town.

We should check out the scene of the crime first. I don't think we can take care of this problem tonight. As such, we should at least spend some time trying to divine just what we're up against before we really start preparations.

(Hint: You won't know for sure what kind of spirit you're up against until you're almost face-to-face, but there are always general preparations a druid can take. Take your best guess and get ready!)
We won't be able to figure out what we're up against until it's in killing us range. Which means we need precautions first.

This. I'd be all for checking out the attack site if I thought we could learn anything from it, but we're probably an even worse ranger than we are herbalist. Looking at a savaged goat carcass or bashed up fence is unlikely to tell us anything other than rough size and maybe basic method of attack, if that. Neither is going to affect our planning, because neither are things we know how to plan for.

The only exception would be definitive proof that it's a mundane threat and not a spirit, because then we'd know there'd be no point preparing anything magical. But even then, the point about us being a crap investigator stands- we're unlikely to be able to tell the difference just from looking at the evidence.

What about footprints? Or broken tree limbs? If something 'physical' left the trees, then we know that there might be broken branches or the like. If it's a spirit, then we prepare for that. If it's physical... Then we might got probs.

One point I feel compelled to elaborate on as the DM is that, in the game's world, spirits can be physical and they all affect the physical world (granted, some may have extra abilities and whatnot, but their primary threat is tearing you limb-from-limb).

Basically, if you fight a beast, it can tear your head off. If you fight a ghost, it can tear your head off. Fortunately for you, rituals and potions can protect you from both.

"We" the Voices that Guide what he does Might be able to on the other hand.
I think you might have more faith in Our ability to discern the exact cause of various kinds of damage than me. Other than really obvious clues, like a really long line probably being one thing dragged in a scraping motion, I don't feel terribly confident we'll be able to discern one kind of drawn damage or wound from another.

In addition to the "everything's physical" bit, this still boils down to us gathering jaderoot because jaderoot solves everything, unless it's an angry villager in which case we just kind of skip that part and show up anyway.

Ah, my bad. I think I misinterpreted the original quote I was commenting on. If you try to fight a bear with jaderoot, you're gonna have a bad time.

We already have a Rowan staff, apparently.

First off, PTW.

To the mines! Before that, teach the villagers how to do a basic ward (like, silver over doorway basic; don't spend more than five minutes on it).

What's the scope of this game, by the way? Does the game end when we defeat the spirit(?), or will we continue on to other druidic adventures after this one?
