Argent, seeing a black spear hurtling at him as he continues watching (neck, not head...), quickly brings up his shield to block it.

so, he just automatically blocks a quick moving spear coming out of nowhere, from an unexpected angle?

Uh, yes, because he saw it and has really good reflexes plus a fast-moving shield.  (It's more like parrying, really.)

Really, the 'seeing it' bit is, to me, the more controversial, but there's no perception stat.
